The Government of Assam or Assam Government abbreviated as GoAS, is the state government of the Indian state of Assam. It consists of the Governor appointed by the President of India as the head of the state, currently Lakshman Prasad Acharya. [3] The head of government is the Chief Minister, currently Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, [4] who is the leader of the group that commands a majority in the unicameral Assam Legislative Assembly. The Assam Assembly is elected by universal adult suffrage for a period of five years. The Chief Minister is assisted by a Council of Ministers that he nominates, the size of which is restricted.

In 2021, the National Democratic Alliance won a majority of seats in the legislature, with 75 seats, followed by Congress with 29 seats and AIUDF with 16.[ citation needed ]

Asom Gana Parishad is a political party in the state of Assam, India. The AGP was formed following the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13 to 14 October 1985 in Golaghat, which also allowed Prafulla Kumar Mahanta who was the youngest chief minister of the state to be elected. Mahendra Mohan Choudhury was a freedom fighter and politician from Nagaon, Undivided Kamrup district of Western Assam. He was Chief Minister of Assam from 1970 to 1972. He also served as governor of Punjab.

He was first elected in 1967. In 2015, he was made a Cabinet Minister of Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician and lawyer serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015 and soon was made convenor of NEDA. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected since 2001.

The North-East Democratic Alliance is a political coalition that was formed on May 24, 2016, by Bharatiya Janata Party. The motive of the new political front was to unite non-Congress parties in Northeast India. Himanta Biswa Sarma was appointed as the convenor of the front.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass is an Indian politician and journalist from Assam serving as the Minister of Panchahyat and Rural Development, Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Government of Assam in the Himanta Biswa Sarma ministry since 2021. He is a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party representing Patacharkuchi since 2021 and Sorbhog from 2011 to 2021. He was elected as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2017. He became a member of the BJP in 1992. Pijush Hazarika is a Bharatiya Janata Party politician from Assam. He has been a member of Assam legislative assembly since 2011. He was elected in Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2011 from Raha constituency and in 2016 and 2021 from Jagiroad constituency.

Dr. Rafiqul Islam is an Indian politician serving as a member of Assam Legislative Assembly from AIUDF since 2011. He got elected in 2021 with the highest margin of votes in the state of Assam from Jania constituency, he has also served as a guest professor in Gauhati University. He is the Chief Whip of AIUDF Legislature party in the Assam Legislative Assembly, General Secretary and Spokesperson of AIUDF party. Sanjoy Kishan is a Bharatiya Janata Party politician from Assam. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2016, representing the Tinsukia constituency.

Gautam Roy is a politician of the Hailakandi District of Assam. He was six times MLA from Katlicherra constituency. He was also minister in Hiteswar Saikia and the Tarun Gogoi led Congress ministry several times. Gautam Roy was the vice president of BCCI and also the president of Assam Cricket Association. Currently he is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sarma ministry</span> Chief minister of Assam

The Sarma ministry is the current council of ministers of the Government of Assam which has been in office since 10 May 2021. The ministry is headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and consists of 16 cabinet ministers. The chief minister and 14 other ministers were sworn-in into office by Governor Jagdish Mukhi on 10 May 2021.

Ardhendu Kumar Dey was an Indian politician and Minister of Irrigation and Soil Conservation in the Government of Assam. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Hojai constituency from 1991 till 2006 as a member of INC. He was re-elected as an MLA from Hojai from 2011 to 2016. In April 2021, he left the Indian National Congress.

The Third Tarun Gogoi ministry is the third consecutive council of ministers of the Government of Assam headed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi between 2011 and 2016. The ministry was constituted on 30 May 2011 after Tarun Gogoi was sworn-in as the chief minister of the state for the third consecutive term after leading the Indian National Congress into victory in the assembly election. The ministry remained into force until 24 May 2016.
