The Assam Mail was one of the better known metre-gauge trains in the Indian Railways system that was there from the pre-independence days. The train was discontinued in 1986 with the completion of the broad-gauge conversion of the metre-gauge line to Dibrugarh.
Popularly known as 3 Up/ 4 Dn (Kalka Mail was 1 Up/ 2 Dn), it originally ran in the pre-independence days from Santahar Junction, now in Bangladesh, to Guwahati. [1] It travelled along the Santahar–Kaunia line up to Kaunia, then to Lalmonirhat along Parbatipur–Lalmonirhat–Burimari line, crossing the Teesta. Thereafter, it took the now-defunct Mogalhat–Gitaldaha route crossing the Dharla over the bridge, part of which has since been washed away, on to Golokganj, Fakiragram Junction and Amingaon covering 506.7 kilometres (314.8 mi) in 14 hrs 00 mins at speed of 36 kilometres per hour (22 mph).
Passengers to and from Kolkata and the rest of India traveled between Kolkata and Santahar by broad-gauge Darjeeling Mail or some other connection and then switched over to metre-gauge Assam Mail. [1]
After independence and partition of India in 1947, the train travel to Assam stopped temporarily (possibly till 1957). When Assam Link Project connected Fakiragram to Kishanganj Assam Mail started running along the Katihar–Siliguri line. It needed a loco reversal at Siliguri Junction and traveled along what is now the New Jalpaiguri–Alipurduar–Samuktala Road line. Assam Mail was converted into a two part train. It ran from New Delhi to Dibrugarh (after Rajendra Setu and Saraighat Bridge came up), with the broad gauge part running up to Barauni from where the metre gauge part continued up to Dibrugarh. Passengers had to get down at Barauni and change trains. [1]
The metre gauge part of the Assam Mail from Barauni to Dibrugarh covered 1,369 kilometres (851 mi). It was one of the longer metre gauge runs in the country, running across the flood plains of the Kosi, the Dooars, Western Assam and finally Upper Assam. [2] In 1986, when the Barauni–Guwahati line was converted into broad gauge the Assam Mail was renamed as the North East Express. [1] The new Superfast train North East Express was introduced via Kanpur, Patna, Barauni, Kishanganj, Fakiragram Junction, covering 1,890 kilometres (1,170 mi) between New Delhi & Guwahati in 33 hrs 15 mins at speed of 57 kilometres per hour (35 mph).
The Northeast Frontier Railway is one of the 19 railway zones of the Indian Railways. It is headquartered in Maligaon, Guwahati in the state of Assam, and responsible for operation and expansion of rail network all across Northeastern states and some districts of eastern Bihar and northern West Bengal.
The East Bengal Mail was one of three trains operated between India and East Pakistan. The rail link was suspended at the outbreak of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
The 12343 / 12344 Sealdah-Haldibari-Sealdah Darjeeling Mail is one of the oldest running legendary trains in India that has been running from pre-independence days and is still in operation. It connects to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway at New Jalpaiguri. This is a major train for Kolkata–New Jalpaiguri route. It is also the first train to run with AC electric loco WAP-7 in Sealdah to New-Jalpaiguri stretch.
The Kamrup Express is a daily Express train which connects Howrah (Kolkata) in West Bengal with Dibrugarh, a major town in upper Assam. Originally the train ran between Howrah and Guwahati, hence the name. Later it was extended to Dibrugarh Town after the successful conversion of Guwahati–Lumding–Dibrugarh from meter gauge to broad gauge.Now the train has been divided in 2 pairs respectively with two routes.1.15959/60 runs Via GHY-LMG-DBRG.2.15961/62 runs via RNY-RPAN-NLP-DBRG through Bogibeel Bridge Vice-Versa. The 15657 / 15658 Brahmaputra Mail is a daily train that connects Old Delhi with Kamakhya. Introduced in 1972 after the construction of the rail section of the Farakka Barrage, the train originally ran as the Tinsukia Mail between Delhi Junction railway station and New Bongaigaon railway stations, with onward metre-gauge connection by a train of the same name numbered as 7Up and 8Dn to Guwahati and Tinsukia in the Indian state of Assam. The train was renamed the Brahmaputra Mail after the successful gauge conversion of the New Bongaigaon–Dibrugarh metre-gauge lines to broad gauge. W.E.F. 20/12/2020 this train is running between Kamakhya Junction (KYQ) & Old Delhi (DLI) & is permanently cancelled between Kamakhya Junction & Dibrugarh.
The Howrah–New Jalpaiguri line is a railway line connecting Howrah with New Jalpaiguri in North Bengal in the Indian state of West Bengal. The line continues through North Bengal and western part of Assam to connect with Guwahati. The Naihati–Bandel link allows trains from another terminus Sealdah in Calcutta to use this route. The line uses a major part of the Barharwa–Azimganj–Katwa loop. Many trains use an alternative line between Howrah and New Farakka, via Bardhaman and Rampurhat. Other parts of West Bengal and Bihar are well-connected to this line. It is under the administrative jurisdiction of Eastern Railway and Northeast Frontier Railway.
Fakiragram is a railway station on the New Jalpaiguri–New Bongaigaon section of Barauni–Guwahati line and is located in Kokrajhar district in the Indian state of Assam. A branch line from Fakiragram connects to Dhubri.
