The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is an international baseball tournament sanctioned from 2006 to 2013 by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and after 2013 by World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB). It was proposed to the IBAF by Major League Baseball (MLB),the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA),and other professional baseball leagues and their players associations around the world. It is one of the two main senior baseball tournaments sanctioned by the WBSC,but the only one which grants to the winner the title of "World Champion".

Yulieski Gourriel Castillo,commonly known as Yuli Gurriel and nicknamed "La Piña",is a Cuban professional baseball first baseman for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for Sancti Spiritus in the Cuban National Series (CNS) and the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Gurriel is a former member of Cuba's national team,and an Olympic Games gold medalist in 2004. Always a versatile infielder,he has also played shortstop,second base,and third base in the major leagues.

Cuba has been described as a baseball powerhouse and currently ranks 7th in WBSC's world rankings. It has medalled in all five Olympics in which baseball was played. Cuba played in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. The team tried but failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics at the eight-team Americas Qualifying Event on May 31 through June 5,2021.
The Netherlands national baseball team is the national baseball team of the Kingdom of the Netherlands,representing the country in international men's baseball. They are currently ranked as the best team in the Confederation of European Baseball,and the team is also ranked ninth in the WBSC World Rankings.

Avispas de Santiago de Cuba is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series based in Estadio Guillermón Moncada in Santiago de Cuba. The Avispas (Wasps) are historically one of the most successful teams in the National Series,the main domestic competition in post-revolutionary Cuban baseball. The Super Classic of the Cuban National Series between EB Santiago de Cuba and Industriales takes place six times per season.
Alazanes de Granma is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series,based in the eastern province of Granma. Until the 2016-2017 season,the Alazanes were a frequent contender,but had never advanced to a National Series final. However,in 2017 Granma not only made it to the Cuban National Series final,but swept Ciego de Ávila to win the series,breaking a 40-year record of being seen as underdogs who could not compete with dominant powerhouse teams.
Toros de Camagüey is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Formed after the Cuban state redefined its provinces in 1977,the Toros advanced the next season to the league championship series,but fell to Henequeneros. They last won group C in 1997-1998.
