Guillfred Francis Besaril (born 9 January 1974) is an Aruban politician of the People's Electoral Movement. He was Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba between 20 November 2017 and 10 June 2022. He previously served in the Estates of Aruba between 2013 and November 2017,the last month as president.
Besaril was born in Savaneta on 9 January 1974. [1] After attending high school he joined the Aruba Police Force in 1993. Besaril worked for the force until 2013. Between 2009 and 2013 Besaril was chairman of the Aruban Police Force union. [1]
In the 2013 general election Besaril was elected with 833 votes to the Estates of Aruba for the People's Electoral Movement. [2] [3] Prior to the elections Besaril had shown ambition to become Minister of Justice in the new government. [4] In November 2014 Besaril filed a police report against two Aruban People's Party politicians,for claims they made against him in the Estates. [5]
During the 2017 general election Besaril was elected to the Estates with 503 votes. On 27 October he was elected President of the Estates. [6] In the government of Evelyn Wever-Croes,Besaril was named Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba. He succeeded Juan David Yrausquin on 20 November 2017. [7] [3] [8] After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic difficulties,Besaril and his fellow Ministers Plenipotentiary of Curaçao and Sint-Maarten argued for reforms in their respective countries,but asked to take into account the differences between the islands. [9] Besaril served as negotiator for Aruba in the talks between Aruba and the Netherlands in the talks about financial oversight. [10] In August 2020 Besaril won a case against an Aruban journalist who made false claims about him. [11] In September 2021,after the 2021 Aruban general election,Wever-Croes reappointed Besaril in his position. [12] Ady Thijsen became his deputy on 1 December 2021. [13]
His term in office ended on 10 June 2022. [14] Besaril was succeeded by Ady Thijsen. [15] It later became public that in May 2021,Aruban Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes had received e-mails by employees of the Arubahuis on the misuse of public funds by Besaril. [14] In January 2023,Aruban MP's Arthur Dowers and Mike de Meza filed an indictment against Besaril,stating that Wevers-Croes had failed to act despite her knowledge of the case. [16] In January 2023 the government of Aruba fired Besaril. In October 2023 the court of civil servants of Aruba found that Besaril was fired justly for serious dereliction of duty. [17]
"Aruba Dushi Tera" is the national anthem of Aruba. It is a waltz written by Juan Chabaya Lampe and composed by Rufo Wever. The last verse was written by Hubert (Lio) Booi. It was accepted as the Aruban national anthem on 18 March 1976. It is written in Papiamento.
Gilberto François "Betico" Croes was an Aruban political activist who was a proponent for Aruba's separation from the Netherlands Antilles. This eventually occurred in 1986,but following a car accident on 31 December 1985,Croes lapsed into a coma and never became conscious to see his accomplishment. He is best remembered as "Libertador" (liberator) and as the father of the Aruban people.
The Aruban People's Party is a Christian-democratic political party in Aruba founded in 1942. AVP is an acronym for the Dutch name of the party.
The People's Electoral Movement is a social democratic political party in Aruba. Following the 2001 general election for the Parliament of Aruba the party won 52.4% of popular vote and 12 out of 21 seats. In the 2005 general election,the party won 43% of the popular vote and 11 out of 21 seats thus won the election and remained in power. In the 2009 general election,MEP lost 2 seats and won 36% of the vote,subsequently losing the election.
Same-sex marriages are not performed in Aruba,Curaçao,or Sint Maarten,which are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The islands were obliged after several court rulings to register any marriage registered in the Kingdom,but this primarily considers residency rights,and they do not have to give same-sex marriages the same legal effect as opposite-sex marriages. Marriage in the European territory of the Netherlands,as well as in the Caribbean municipalities of Bonaire,Sint Eustatius and Saba,is open to any two people irrespective of sex.
Democratic Network is a progressive,green political party in Aruba. Since the 2017 Aruban general election it has one seat in the Estates of Aruba and is part of the government coalition under Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes.
Francisco Walfrido "Frido" Croes was an Aruban politician and schoolteacher who held the office of Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba from 2005 to 2009. Prior to that,he served as a member of the Estates of Aruba from 1989 to 1994,and as its President from 2001 to 2004. He also served as Minister of Education from 2004 to 2005.
Michiel Godfried "Mike" Eman is an Aruban politician who served as the 3rd Prime Minister of Aruba from 2009 to 2017. His political career began in 2001,but Eman has been involved in politics in one way or another since his childhood. His grandfather,father and brother were all prominent politicians in their lifetimes,with Henny Eman having preceded him in office (twice) as Prime Minister,including as the first to hold the office after Aruba's status aparte in 1986.
Antonito Gordiano "Mito" Croes was an Aruban politician of the Aruban People's Party. He served as Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba from 1994 to 2001. He previously served as member of the Estates and government minister of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
Juan Alfonso Boekhoudt is an Aruban politician serving as the governor of Aruba since 1 January 2017. He previously served as minister plenipotentiary from 14 November 2013 to 17 November 2016.
Evelyna Christina "Evelyn" Wever-Croes is an Aruban politician and current Prime Minister of Aruba,serving since November 2017. She is the first woman to hold this office. She is a member of the People's Electoral Movement (MEP) and has been the leader of the party since 2011.
Juan David Yrausquin is an Aruban politician. He was Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba between 17 November 2016 and 20 November 2017. He was Minister of Finance between 2013 and 2014 in the second Mike Eman cabinet.
Angel Roald Bermudez is an Aruban politician. He served as Minister of Transport and Communication between 1987 and 1989. From 2011 to 2014 he was director of the Tax and Customs Administration of the Caribbean Netherlands. Bermudez served as Minister of Finance between 28 July 2014 and 17 November 2017.

The first Wever-Croes cabinet was the cabinet of Aruba from 17 November 2017 to 20 September 2021. It was formed by a coalition government of the political parties People's Electoral Movement (MEP),Proud and Respected People (POR) and Democratic Network (RED),and was led by Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes. It was the country's first coalition government in sixteen years and the first cabinet to be headed by a woman.
The second Wever-Croes cabinet is the current cabinet of Aruba. It was installed on 20 September 2021 by Deputy Governor Yvonne Laclé-Dirksz. The cabinet is formed by a coalition government of the center-left political parties People's Electoral Movement (MEP) and RAIZ,and is led by Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes.
