Gulzar Banu (born 1963 [1] ) is an Indian politician and former mayor of the Mangalore City Corporation, India. She is a 2 time corporator of Katipalla. A member of the Indian National Congress (INC), Banu is the sixth woman to hold the position of mayor. [2]
Bano studied till the class 8 and then she married Shamsuddin. [2] The couple has ten children, four are married. [2]
Banu won the 2012 mayoral election after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Roopa Bangera, was disqualified due to a failure to properly submit her caste certificate in the prescribed format within the given time, and that the certificate subsequently submitted by her was past the time stipulated for filing the nomination. [1] [3] As a result, Banu became the only running candidate and was hence declared elected by default. [1] This incident came as a shock to many, since the BJP nominee was widely considered to be most likely to win. [2] Due to the absence of any provision in the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, to call for a no-confidence motion, Banu was to serve as mayor for the proscribed term from 7 March 2012 to 20 February 2013. [2] She took office on 7 March 2012, with BJP politician Amitakala as Deputy Mayor. [4]
George Mathew Fernandes was an Indian trade unionist, statesman, and journalist, who served as the 22nd Defence Minister of India from 1998 until 2004. Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician, who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress, where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat, which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024, he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Established on 15 February 1950, the executive power of the PMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, IAS.The general body of the PMC consists of 162 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. The Mangalore City Corporation is the municipal corporation responsible for overseeing the local administration of the Indian city of Mangalore and it's suburbs, which are a major urban area and the most important port city of Karnataka state. The mechanism of municipal corporation was introduced in British India, with formation of the municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1762. It consists of a legislative and an executive body. The legislative body is headed by the Mayor, while the executive body is headed by a Chief Commissioner.

He is the 25th person to have become mayor of the city corporation, since its establishment in 1984. Kumar is a Dalit, and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was succeeded as Mayor on 7 March 2012 by Indian National Congress (INC) candidate, Gulzar Banu.
