The Guyana national badminton team represents Guyana in international badminton team competitions. [1] The Guyanese junior team have competed in the BWF World Junior Championships mixed team event, which is also called the Suhandinata Cup. The Guyanese team have never competed in the Pan American Badminton Championships.

History

Badminton was first practiced in Guyana in the 1970s. The sport was played mostly by the Indo-Guyanese. The sport later grew in popularity and the national team later sent its first few players to debut in the 1992 CAREBACO Badminton Championships. The Ramdhani badminton family became a household name for badminton in Guyana. [2] [3]

Gokarn Ramdhani was appointed as president of the Guyana Badminton Association in the 1990s. Under his leadership, Guyanese badminton grew as the junior team claimed 2nd place at the CAREBACO Junior Team Championships in 1990, 1992 and 2016 before his passing in 2021. [4] [5] The Ramdhani siblings, Priyanna and Narayan Ramdhani have made many achievements for Guyanese badminton on the world stage. [6] The Guyana badminton team later reached rank 74 on the BWF World Ranking which would be their highest ranking to date. [7]

Emelia Ramdhani soon took over Gokarn's place as president of Guyana Badminton Association and head coach of the Guyana badminton team. [8]

Mixed team

The Guyanese mixed team first competed in the 1972 CAREBACO Team Championships in Kingston, Jamaica. The team beat Trinidad and Tobago to finish in third place. [9] The team then competed in the 1992 CAREBACO Team Championships and finished in 5th place. In 1993, the team finished in fourth place at the 1993 CAREBACO Team Championships.

St. Andrew's Kirk is one of the oldest buildings in Georgetown, Guyana that has been continually in use for religious purposes. The Dutch Reformed congregation laid its foundations in 1811. However, due to financial difficulties it was acquired by Scottish Presbyterians and was formally opened for service on 28 February 1818.

Virgil Soeroredjo is a former Surinamese badminton player and now coach. He competed for Suriname at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He also competed for Suriname at 3 Pan Am Games: the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2007 Pan American Games & the 2011 Pan American Games. As a young badminton player of the club SCVU in Suriname Virgil Soeroredjo won numerous juniors titles and was soon selected to represent his country abroad winning several juniors medals at Caribbean, Central American and South American events. Much of his success was with his doubles partner Mitchel Wongsodikromo.

Mitchel Arthur Wongsodikromo is a Surinamese badminton player and coach. He competed for Suriname at three Pan Am Games: 2003 Pan American Games, 2007 Pan American Games & the 2011 Pan American Games. As a very young badminton player of the club T.N.F. in Suriname Mitchel Wongsodikromo was an exceptional talent and won numerous juniors titles and was soon selected to represent his country abroad winning several juniors medals at Caribbean, Central American and South American events. Much of his success was with his doubles partner Virgil Soeroredjo.

Kim Astrup Sørensen is a Danish badminton player. He was the men's doubles gold medalists at the 2018 European Championships and the 2023 European Games with his partner Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. He also won the bronze medal at the World Championships in 2021 and later a silver medal in 2023. Astrup joined the Denmark winning team at the 2016 Thomas Cup in Kunshan, China, where he and his teammates beating Indonesia 3–2 in the final. Together with Rasmussen, he reached a career high of World number 5 in September 2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Carebaco International</span> International badminton tournament

The Carebaco International is an international badminton tournament of the "Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation" (Carebaco). Until 1999 the tournament was a closed event eligible only for Carebaco members, but to gain BWF World Ranking points since 1999 the Carebaco International tournament became a level 4 open individual event, now part of the BWF Future Series.

Sören Hans Brad Opti is a badminton player from Suriname. He is a two time Olympian, respresenting Suriname at the 2016 Rio Olympics and at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He was also selected to represent his country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, but had to stay home due to a positive Covid-test. During the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics, Opti was the flagbearer for Suriname. Opti participated in the 2014 and 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Oscar Roël Brandon is a Surinamese badminton player, coach and Olympic team manager. He competed for Suriname at the 1996 Summer Olympics as a badminton player in the Men's singles event. And he was "chef de mission" for Suriname at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shi Yuqi</span> Chinese badminton player (born 1996)

Shi Yuqi is a Chinese badminton player who is currently the world number one in men’s singles. Shi won his first Superseries title in the 2016 French Open. At the 2017 All England Open, he defeated 6-time champion Lin Dan to reach the final, and repeated the same feat again at the 2018 All England Open, where he outclassed Lin Dan in the tournament final. He also won a silver medal at the 2018 World Championships.

Jada Renales is a Trinidadian badminton player. Renales is coached by her father, Derwin Renales, a former national badminton player. She was the national under-19 champion for three consecutive years. At the 2012-2016 Carebaco Junior International tournament, she was 6 times in the second place and 5 times in third place. In 2014, she represented her country competed at the Veracruz Central American and Caribbean Games. In 2017, she won double title at the Solo Open Championships. She clinched the women's and mixed doubles title, and also place second in the singles event. She also received the TTBA's 2012 Most Outstanding Female Junior, 2014 Female Player of the Year, and 2015 Junior Female Player of the Year.

Dennis Coke is a Jamaican badminton player who competed at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore. In 2009, he won the boys' singles and doubles at the All Jamaica Junior Championships. At the BWF International tournament, he was the men's doubles runner-up at the 2015 Carebaco International and mixed doubles runner-up at the 2017 Jamaica International. He also won the bronze medal at the 2016 Pan Am Badminton Championships in the mixed doubles event partnered with Wynter. In 2017, he won the Jamaican National Badminton Championships in the men's singles and doubles event partnered with Anthony McNee. Coke was part of the national team that won the men's team bronze at the 2018 Pan Am Men's Team Championships. In 2018, he competed at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Jennifer Innis is a Guyanese and American former sprinter and long jumper. Innis represented Guyana at the 1979 Pan American Games. She competed in the women's 100 metres and long jump at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Innis was a finalist in the 1983 World Championships long jump, finishing eleventh. For thirty years, she held the Guyanese women's national record for 100 meters at 11.26 seconds until it was surpassed by Brenessa Thompson in 2017 with a time of 11.14 seconds.

The Carebaco Junior International Badminton Championships is an open junior U19 tournament organized yearly since 2013 at the Carebaco Games by the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) normally one week prior to the Carebaco International.

Desmond Amsterdam is a Guyanese boxer. He competed at the 2022 South American Games in the boxing competition, winning the bronze medal in the men's light heavyweight event. He previously competed at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships in the middleweight event and at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the men's middleweight event, winning no medal in either.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Guyana at the 2023 Pan American Games</span> Sporting event delegation

Guyana is scheduled to compete at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile from October 20 to November 5, 2023. This will be Guyana's 17th appearance at the Pan American Games, having competed at every edition of the games since the third edition in 1959.
