HMP Addiewell is a private prison located near to the village of Addiewell in West Lothian, Scotland. [2] HMP Addiewell is operated by Sodexo Justice Services [3] and contracted to the Scottish Prison Service. The prison holds adult males who have been convicted as well as those being held on remand.

History

In January 2004, a six-week public consultation began for a planning application for a new £80 million prison in West Lothian. [4] In June 2006, the contract was awarded to a consortium of companies that included Sodexo Investment Services and the Royal Bank Project Investments. [5] The prison opened on 12 December 2008 with capacity for 700 prisoners, with a further 96 places held in reserve. In November 2010 the prison was running at capacity, with 700 prisoners being held. [6]

In October 2009 there was a disturbance involving around 20 inmates which led to a prison custody officer requiring hospital treatment. February 2009 saw a cell being damaged by fire in an incident of 3 hours duration. Two prison custody officers were injured during a riot in January 2010. [7]

In March 2011 the Chief Inspector of Prisons expressed concerns about the level of assaults on staff at the prison. [8]

HMP Edinburgh is located in the west of Edinburgh on the main A71, in an area now known as Stenhouse, and, although never named as such, has commonly been known as Saughton Prison from the old name for the general area. The prison is situated on the edge of a predominantly residential area and has good transport and road links to the city centre, which provides good access both for local courts and prison visitors. The building of the prison began on 31 July 1914 with the first prisoner being received in 1919. The prison consists of four halls: Glenesk, Hermiston, Ingliston and Ratho.

HM Prison Peterborough is a Category B private prison for men, and a closed prison for women and female young offenders, located in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England. The prison is operated by Sodexo Justice Services, and is the only dual purpose-built prison holding males and females in the United Kingdom. The prison, which has a population of 320 inmates, comprises four large wings, each with a separate housing arrangement for female detainees and male detainees.
