Hafizullah Wali Rahimi has been serving as president of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (formerly Afghanistan National Olympic Committee) since April 2018. In September 2021,Rahimi left Afghanistan after the Taliban's return to power. He is still recognized as the Committee's president in exile. [1] He is of Tajik ethnicity. [2] Rahimi is also a member of the Peace Through Sport Committee. [3] [4]
On 5 April 2018,at the NOC's third Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) in Kabul,Rahimi was elected to the committee's president. [5] The elections were supervised by IOC representatives from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA),including the continental body's Asian Games Head of Department,Haider Farman. Rahimi succeeded Mohammad Zahir Aghbar as President of the committee. [6] [7] [8]
The President is accompanied by CEO Dad Mohammad Paida Akhtari,secretary general Mohammad Yonus Popalzay,Vice Presidents Bawar Hotak and Mohammad Hashim Karimi,and Vice President for the women's division,Robina Jalali. [9]
In 2020,Rahimi signed an agreement with four national sports federations to secure Olympic Solidarity funding for the 2020 Summer Olympics. [10]
The Asian Games,also known as Asiad,is a continental multi-sport event held every four years for athletes of Asia. The Games were regulated by Asian Games Federation from the first Games in New Delhi,India in 1951,until the 1978 Games. Since the 1982 Games,they have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia,after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation. The Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and are the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in Asia,currently with 45 member National Olympic Committees. Talal Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah was elected as President of the OCA on 8 July 2023. However,on 30 July 2023,the International Olympic Committee asked Randhir Singh,who was the acting president at the time,to continue as the Acting President of the OCA while the IOC investigated the OCA presidential election of 2023. On 13 October 2023,the IOC ethics committee asked the OCA to annul its 2023 elections due to Talal’s candidacy not fulfilling the eligibility conditions defined by the OCA Constitution and election interference by his brother Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.
Afghanistan has competed in 15 Summer Games. They have never appeared in any Winter Games. The country made its first appearance at the Berlin Games in 1936. It has sent a delegation to 14 of the 19 subsequent Summer Games since then. It is organised by the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The Committee is currently in exile and presided by Hafizullah Wali Rahimi:the International Olympic Committee has not recognized the Taliban regime's Committee,headed by Ahmadullah Wasiq.
The Asian Games Federation (AGF) was the governing body of sports in Asia from 1949 to 1982. The federation was disbanded on 16 November 1982 in New Delhi and succeeded by the Olympic Council of Asia. The AGF was responsible for the organisation of the Asian Games from 1951 to 1982. The Federation was established on 13 February 1949,in a meeting held in Patiala House in New Delhi.

The Myanmar Olympic Committee,established in 1947 and recognised in the same year by the International Olympic Committee,is the National Olympic Committee for Myanmar.
Pakistan is a member of the South Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA),has participated in the Asian Games since their second edition in 1954. The Pakistan Olympic Association,established in 1948,and recognised in the same year by the International Olympic Committee,is the National Olympic Committee for Pakistan.
The Philippines is a member of the South East Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA),and has participated in the Asian Games since their inception in 1951. The Philippine Olympic Committee,established in 1911,and recognized in 1929 by the International Olympic Committee,is the National Olympic Committee for Philippines.
The 2002 Asian Games was a multi-sport event held in Busan,South Korea from September 29 to October 14,2002. Busan was the second South Korean city to host the Games,after Seoul in 1986. A total of 6,572 athletes—4,605 men and 1,967 women—from 44 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in 38 sports divided into 419 events. The number of competing athletes was higher than the 1998 Asian Games,in which 6,544 athletes from 41 NOCs participated. It was the first time in the history of the Asian Games that all 44 member nations of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) participated in the Games. Afghanistan returned after the fall of the Taliban government in the midst of ongoing war;East Timor,newest member of the OCA made its debut;and North Korea competed for the first time in an international sporting event hosted by South Korea. Both nations marched together at the opening ceremony with a Korean Unification Flag depicting the Korean Peninsula as United Korea.
The 2024 Asian Youth Games or AYG 2024,officially the 3rd Asian Youth Games and commonly as Shantou 2021,is a cancelled multi-sport event which was intended to be held in Shantou,Guangdong,China in 2024.
Iran competed in the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo,Japan from February 19 to 26. The country competed in one sport.
Malaysia participated in the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo and Obihiro,Japan from February 19 to 26. The country is scheduled to compete with thirty-six athletes in three sports.

Independent Olympic Athletes are scheduled to compete in the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo and Obihiro,Japan from February 19 to 26. The team is scheduled to compete in one sport:ice hockey,and consists of 23 athletes.
Mohammad Zahir Aghbar,is an Afghan diplomat and law enforcement official. He currently serves as Afghanistan's ambassador to Tajikistan and has also claimed the title of acting First Vice President of Afghanistan.
Nazar Mohammad Mutmaeen is an Afghan writer,journalist and political analyst. He is currently serving as acting head of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. The International Olympic Committee has not recognized Muatmeen and considers his predecessor Hafizullah Wali Rahimi to be the legitimate president in exile of the Afghan Olympic Committee.
