Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani and Ayurvedic pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) & Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. Some of its most famous products include Sharbat Rooh Afza, Safi, Roghan Badam Shirin, Sualin, Joshina and Cinkara. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.

Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language. Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in terai town Pilibhit UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.

Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan[ when? ], who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.

Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation. [1]

After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen. Abdul Hameed became known as "Hakeem Sahab".

Hamdard Laboratories has a twin manufacturing plant in Ghaziabad and one plant in Manesar Haryana. One of its products, Safi has high demand in the country since it is believed to be used for blood purification [2] [3]

Hakim Ajmal Khan Indian politician

Mohammad Ajmal Khan, better known as Hakim Ajmal Khan, was a physician in Delhi, India, and one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University. Hamdard University

Hamdard University is a private research university with campuses in Karachi and Islamabad, Pakistan. It was founded in 1991 by the renowned philanthropist Hakim Said of the Hamdard Foundation. Hamdard is one of the first and the oldest private institutions of higher education in Pakistan. In Karachi, Hamdard University is the largest private research university with a campus area of over 350 acres.

Hakim Said Pakistani medical researcher, scholar, philanthropist and a governor of Sindh Province

Hakeem Muhammad Saeed was a Pakistani medical researcher, scholar, philanthropist. He also served as governor of Sindh Province from 1993 until 1994. Saeed was one of Pakistan's most prominent medical researchers in the field of Eastern medicines. He established the Hamdard Foundation in 1948, prior to his settlement in West Pakistan. In a few years time, the herbal medical products of the Hamdard Foundation became household names in Pakistan. Hakeem Muhammad Saeed authored and compiled about 200 books in medicine, philosophy, science, health, religion, natural medicine, literary, social and travelogues. In 1981, Saeed became one of the founding member of the World Cultural Council, a non-profit international organization, based in Mexico. On 17 October 1998, Hakeem Saeed was assassinated by a group of unknown assailants while he was on his way to attend a medical experiment at the Hamdard Laboratories in Karachi. His killing prompted Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif to impose direct federal rule over the Sindh province.

Rooh Afza

Rooh Afza is a concentrated squash. It was formulated in 1906 in Ghaziabad, India by Naqi Ali Shah, and launched from Old Delhi, India. Currently, Rooh Afza is manufactured by the companies founded by him and his sons, Hamdard (Wakf) Laboratories, India, Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Pakistan and Hamdard (WAQF) Laboratories, Bangladesh. Since 1948, the company has been manufacturing the product in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Jamia Hamdard

Jamia Hamdard is an institute of higher education deemed to be university located in New Delhi, India. It is a government-funded university. Established in 1989, was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhi on August 1, 1989. In 2019 it was awarded the Institute of Eminence status by Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman Indian academic

Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman is an Indian scholar of Unani medicine. He founded Ibn Sina Academy of Medieval Medicine and Sciences in 2000. He had earlier served as Professor and chairman, Department of Ilmul Advia at the Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, for over 40 years before retiring as Dean Faculty of Unani Medicine. Presently, he is serving AMU as "Honorary Treasurer". In 2006, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for his contribution to Unani Medicine.

Hamdard Pakistan, is a Pakistani unani medicine company which is based in Karachi, Pakistan. It was established by Hakim Said as Hamdard Laboratories in 1948.

Hakim Mohammad Nasir was a Pakistani poet who was widely known for his ghazal song Jab sey tu nay mujhey deewana bana rakha hai sung by Abida Parveen.

Safi is an Unani medicine which claims to be a blood-purifier. It is produced by Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) in Ghaziabad India, as well as in Pakistan and in Bangladesh. According to the package, it "corrects the digestive system, relieves constipation, prevents and cures boils, pimples, and skin eruptions."

The Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, also popularly known as Tibbia College, is an institution under Government of Delhi, located at Karol Bagh in New Delhi, India. The institution which offers education and training in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, has its origins dating back to the late 19th century. The college, whose foundation was laid by Lord Hardinge on 29 March 1916, the then Viceroy of India and was inaugurated by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on 13 February 1921, offers bachelor's and masters (MD) degrees in Ayurvedic and Unani streams.

Hakim Hammad Usmani

Hakim Hammad Usmani is said to have been the foremost hakim and scholar of Unani medical science of modern times. He has been recognized not only by the state government of Uttar Pradesh but also the government of India. He has been a faculty member of many universities and social and academic organizations. Central Council of Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) recognized his efforts by publishing a special Journal on his life and contribution and named it as "Hammad. Usmani Number, Vol. 2. No. 3, January–March, 2001". An article was also dedicated to him in its regular publication "Hammad Usmani – Aik Danishwar Tabib, Jahan-e Tibb."

Dawakhana Shifaul Amraz (Regd), was a Unani pharmaceutical company established in 1894 at Tijara, India. It was one of the largest manufacturer of many Unani medicine before the partition of India.

Hakim Abdul Hameed was an Indian physician of the traditional medicine system of Unani, the founder chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, and a former chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He was the founder and chief trustee of Hamdard Laboratories. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1965, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award and in 1992, the government awarded him the third highest Indian honour of Padma Bhushan.
