Julius Hamunyera Hambyuka (born 25 March 1966) is a Namibian politician who has served as a Member of the National Assembly of Namibia since March 2015. A member of the ruling SWAPO party, he was appointed the Government Chief Whip of the National Assembly in March 2020.

Background and education

Hambyuka was born on 25 March 1966 in Tondoro in the former South West Africa, now Namibia. He matriculated from Dr Romanus Kampungu Senior Secondary School and went on to study at the Polytechnic of Namibia where he obtained a diploma in business management and administration and a certificate in event management. Hambyuka started his career by working at the Katemo Agriculture Cooperative. [1]

Political career

Within SWAPO, he was a regional administrator from 1998 to 2000, a deputy party director from 2001 to 2003, and the director of administration at the party's regional branch in Kavango West from 2004 until 2015. He was elected to Parliament in November 2014. He took office as an MP on 20 March 2015. He was largely a backbencher during his first term. [1]

At the 2019 general election, he was re-elected for a second term as a parliamentarian. [2] When the National Assembly convened in March 2020, Hambyuka was named SWAPO chief whip and consequently became the Government Chief Whip of the National Assembly. [3] [4]

Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma, is a Namibian revolutionary, anti-apartheid activist and politician who served three terms as the first President of Namibia, from 1990 to 2005. Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. Prior to 1960, SWAPO was known as the Ovambo People's Organisation (OPO). He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia's political independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in August 1966 at Omungulugwombashe, beginning after the United Nations withdrew the mandate for South Africa to govern the territory. Nujoma led SWAPO during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.

Theo-Ben Gurirab was a Namibian politician who served in various senior government positions. He served as the second Prime Minister of Namibia from 28 August 2002 to 20 March 2005, following the demotion and subsequent resignation of Hage Geingob. Previously he was the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 2002, and was President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1999 to 2000. He was Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2005 to 2015, when he was replaced by Peter Katjavivi. Gurirab ultimately resigned from politics in 2015.

Hage Geingob President of Namibia

Hage Gottfried Geingob is the third and current president of Namibia, in office since 21 March 2015. Geingob was the first Prime Minister of Namibia from 21 March 1990 to 28 August 2002, and served as Prime Minister again from 4 December 2012 to 21 March 2015. Between 2008 and 2012 Geingob served as Minister of Trade and Industry. He is also the current president of the ruling SWAPO Party since his election to the position in November 2017.

Benjamin Ulenga is a Namibian politician. In the 1990s, he served under the SWAPO government as a deputy minister and as an ambassador, but he left SWAPO in 1998 and founded an opposition party, the Congress of Democrats (CoD), in 1999. He was a member of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2000 to 2015 and led the CoD until 2015.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is a Namibian politician who is the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia since March 2015. She has also been serving as Namibia's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since December 2012. From March 2010 to December 2012, she was Minister of the Environment and Tourism. Nandi-Ndaitwah is a member of SWAPO, Namibia's ruling party, and a long-time member of the National Assembly of Namibia. 2019 Namibian general election Namibian general election

Johanna Kandjimi is a Namibian politician who serves as a Member of the National Assembly of Namibia, representing the ruling SWAPO party. She was sworn in as a parliamentarian in March 2015 after her election in November 2014.

Jan Johannes van Wyk is a Namibian politician who has served as a Member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 2015, representing the United People's Movement (UPM) from 2015 to 2020 and the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) from 2020 onwards. He is the UPM's current vice-president and former national chairperson. Van Wyk represented the UPM on the Rehoboth Town Council from 2010 to 2015 and was the UPM's sole parliamentary representative before the party formed a pact with the PDM ahead of the 2019 general election.

Mathias Mbundu is a Namibian politician and the current deputy secretary-general of the Republican Party. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly since March 2015. After the death of Clara Gowases in June 2020, Mbundu was appointed as the party's leader in the assembly.
