Han Ong (born 1968) is an American playwright and novelist. A high-school dropout, he is one of the youngest recipients of a MacArthur Fellowship. [1] Born in the Philippines, [2] Ong moved to the United States at 16. His works, which include the novels Fixer Chao and The Disinherited, address such themes as outsiderness, cultural conflict, and class conflict.
"I've written enough now to figure out I have a recurring tendency, which is that a lot of my characters are outsiders", Ong told a reporter after the debut of his second book. "It comes from being an outsider twice over—my queerness and my ethnicity. I think it's a gift, though. In life it may not be a gift, but in art it is." [3]
Han Ong was born on February 5, 1968,[ citation needed ] to ethnic Chinese parents in Manila, the Philippines. His family immigrated to the U.S. in 1984, and settled in Koreatown in Los Angeles. He attended Grant High School, a predominantly white school. Ong did not share a close relationship with his four siblings, and he struggled with a sense of alienation in his new homeland as well as with his experience with adolescence. He recalled, "Puberty plus a new country—both are tough enough on their own." He found solace in books and television.
A high school drama course sparked his interest in theater. He wrote his first play at age 16 and was admitted to a young playwrights' lab at the Los Angeles Theater Center. He dropped out of high school at 18 because he did not feel it was beneficial; he earned a GED later. Ong worked several odd jobs to support himself as he wrote, such as working in a trophy-manufacturing warehouse, until he was awarded a commission from the Mark Taper Forum and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1993 Ong won the Joseph Kesselring Prize for best new American plays for "Swoony Planet". [5]
In 1994, Ong moved to New York, where he received critical acclaim for his plays. He was praised by Robert Brustein, the artistic director of the American Repertory Theater and one of the most esteemed figures of the American stage.[ citation needed ] In 1997, at age 29, Ong was one of 23 winners of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship; his grant was $200,000. He said in an interview, "I hope this MacArthur Fellowship demonstrates the importance of self-determination and the hunger for improvement for people of [my generation]. I didn't take being a [high-school] dropout as a measure of my intelligence or as a harbinger of my future."[ citation needed ]
Ong's works have been performed at venues such as the Highways Performance Space and Gallery and the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California; Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York; Portland Stage Company in Maine; Boston's American Repertory Theater; and at the Almeida Theater in London. He collaborated with fellow Filipino American writer Jessica Hagedorn in 1993 to write a performance piece, "Airport Music", for the Los Angeles Festival.[ citation needed ]
Ong is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fiction and the TCG/NEA Playwriting Award. "Fixer Chao" was named a Los Angeles Times "Best Book of the Year" and nominated for a Stephen Crane First Fiction Award. "The Disinherited" was nominated for a LAMBDA Book Award.[ citation needed ]
Ong has recently focused on novels and hopes to revisit the Philippines after more than 20 years of separation from his homeland.[ citation needed ]
Ong received the 2010/2011 Berlin Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin. [6]

Ong's works are often set in urban, multicultural settings. His plays can be divided into two groups: those exploring issues related to immigration and those that examine the lives of non-stereotypical Asian Americans. His work portrays the darker side of Asian American life. The characters are typically depressed and hopeless. They are alienated from society and lack mutual communication, respect, and warmth in their family lives. This sense of alienation and outsiderness draws upon the memories of his adolescence.

The San Jose Repertory Theatre was the first resident professional theatre company in San Jose, California. It was founded in 1980 by James P. Reber. In 2008, after the demise of the American Musical Theatre of San Jose, the San Jose Rep became the largest non-profit, professional theatre company in the South Bay with an annual operating budget of $5 million. In 2006, it was saved from impending insolvency by a $2 million bailout loan from the city of San Jose; this was later restructured into a long-term loan similar to a mortgage.

David Esbjornson is a director and producer who has worked throughout the United States in regional theatres and on Broadway, and has established strong and productive relationships with some of the profession's top playwrights, actors, and companies. Esbjornson was the artistic director of Seattle Repertory Theatre in Seattle, Washington, but left that position in summer 2008.

Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas is an American playwright and director. He first studied playwriting with Octavio Solis, Cherríe Moraga and María Irene Fornés. His numerous awards include fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and the Guggenheim Foundation. He received an MFA from Brown University and lives in New York City.
Rajiv Joseph is an American playwright. He was named a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and he won an Obie Award for Best New American Play for his play Describe the Night.
David Adjmi is an American playwright. Richard Dresser is an American playwright, screenwriter, novelist, and teacher whose work has been performed in New York, leading regional theaters, and all over Europe. His first dystopian fiction novel, It Happened Here, was released in October 2020. The novel is an oral history of an American family from the years 2019 to 2035, dealing with life in a totalitarian state when you still have Netflix and two-day free shipping and all you've lost is your freedom. He is co-producing a documentary about Daniel and Phillip Berrigan, antiwar priests and lifelong activists.
Fixer Chao is a 2002 novel by Filipino American author Han Ong.
Cristian Amigo is an American composer, improviser, guitarist, sound designer, and ethnomusicologist. His compositional and performing output includes blues and soul, music for the theater, chamber and orchestral music, opera, avant-jazz and rock music, and art/pop song. He has also recorded solo albums on the innova, Deep Ecology and BA labels. Amigo earned a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from UCLA where he focused on the music of Chile, Peru, and Argentina, as well as anthropological theory, critical studies, and intercultural aesthetics. While in graduate school, he was second guitarist to the Peruvian Afro-Criollo guitarist Carlos Hayre, with whom he played in concerts and festivals including the World Festival of Sacred Music. He is currently composer-in-residence at INTAR Theater in New York City and Music/Design/Production Faculty @ CalArts School of Theater Department of Experience Design and Production in Valencia, California.
Lila Rose Kaplan is a 21st-century American playwright. She currently lives in Somerville, MA, where she was a Huntington Playwriting Fellow with the Huntington Theatre Company (2012-2014) as well as a Next Voices Playwriting Fellow with New Repertory Theatre (2015-2016).

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is an American playwright. His plays Gloria and Everybody were finalists for the 2016 and 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His play Appropriate made his Broadway debut as a playwright in 2023 and earned him his first Tony Award. His additional plays include An Octoroon and The Comeuppance. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2016.

Janet Allard is an American playwright and theatre educator. Allard was born and raised in Hawaii. She currently teaches in the Theatre Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Allard's plays have been produced at The Guthrie Lab, The Kennedy Center, Mixed Blood Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons, Yale Repertory Theatre, The Yale Cabaret, The Women's Project and Productions, Perseverance Theatre, The House Of Candles, and Access Theater in New York City, as well as internationally in Ireland, England, Greece, and New Zealand. She has twice been awarded a Jerome Fellowship by The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis and has been a MacDowell Colony Fellow and a Fulbright Fellow.

Ong's The L.A. Plays, acclaimed in a previous engagement at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, can now be seen at the Almeida Theatre in London... Ong's L.A. Plays focus on an Asian-American hustler named Greg, but their theme extends beyond the character's ethnic makeup. It's not as if I wake up in the morning and the first thought that pops into my head is 'I'm Asian-American'. I'm more likely to be thinking it's dingy outside, and I hate traffic; those are the thoughts that will worm their way into a play.
