Hancock State Prison is a Georgia Department of Corrections state prison for men located in Hancock County, Georgia. [2] The facility opened in 1991 and currently has a capacity of 1191 prisoners.

In 2010, Hancock state prison participated in the 2010 Georgia prison strike using contraband cell phones. The goal was to improve safety in Georgia state prisons and get rid of free labor. In 2025, many prisoners in the prison are currently stillusing contraband cell phones to facilitate harrassing, illicit criminal activity with other people outside of the prison. Supervisors at the prison have stated they 'don't want to be bothered with inmates having cell phones.' The issue remains at large and poses a growing concern to the free society outside of the prison.

A riot in November 2011 left 12 prisoners injured. The fight was gang-related, and organized with contraband cell phones. [3] Hancock is one of several high-security Georgia state prisons found to have a large percentage of inoperative locks. In June 2012 auditors found 28% of Hancock's locks either didn't work or could be defeated. [4]

Hancock was one of nine Georgia state prisons implicated in an FBI sting operation announced in February 2016. The agency indicted 47 correction officers who'd agreed to deliver illegal drugs while in uniform. These charges were "part of a larger public corruption investigation into Georgia Correctional Facilities". [5]

Convicted serial killer Wayne Williams is serving a life sentence at Hancock, as is Charles Lee Duffy.

Pontiac Correctional Center, established in June 1871, is an Illinois Department of Corrections maximum security prison for adult males in Pontiac, Illinois. The prison also has a medium security unit that houses medium to minimum security inmates and is classified as Level 3. Until the 2011 abolition of the death penalty in Illinois, the prison housed male death row inmates, but had no execution chamber. Inmates were executed at the Tamms Correctional Center. Although the capacity of the prison is 2172, it has an average daily population of approximately 2000 inmates.

The Baldwin State Prison, previously the Baldwin Correctional Institution and the Georgia Women's Correctional Institution (GWCI), is a prison located in Milledgeville, Georgia, United States, with a Hardwick postal address. The prison has a capacity of 900. After complaints in the early 1990s by more than 200 women of sexual abuse by guards, an investigation was conducted. More than a dozen guards were prosecuted. The state decided to move the women to other prison facilities for a total change in culture. This facility now houses only adult male felons, with a capacity of 992.

Dooly State Prison (DSP) is a medium security facility located in Unadilla, Georgia, United States. The complex began its construction in 1993 and opened in 1994. It can house up to 1702 prisoners in dorms that are triple bunks, double bunks, with some single beds. There is a separate unit for incorrigible inmates.

Robert Johnson is a retired South Carolina Department of Corrections Captain and United States Air Force veteran. He was a guard at the Lee Correctional Institution in South Carolina, where he oversaw efforts to stop contraband cellphones and drugs.

The 2010 Georgia prison strike was a prison strike involving prisoners at 7 prisons in the U.S. state of Georgia. The strike, organized by the prisoners using contraband cell phones, began on December 9 and ended on December 15. It was reported at the time to be the largest prison strike in United States history and was followed by similar strikes in several other states, as well as nationwide strikes several years later, in 2016 and 2018.

Lauren Teresa Giddings was an American woman who was murdered by Stephen Mark McDaniel on June 26, 2011, in Macon, Georgia, United States. McDaniel pleaded guilty in 2014, and was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.
