Handeni is a town located in the Handeni Urban District, Tanga Region, Tanzania. It is the capital of both Handeni Town Council and Handeni District. The 2012 national census estimated the population of Handeni Town Council at 79,056. [1]
A paved secondary road connects Handeni with Korogwe in the northeast and Mkata in the southeast; both Korogwe and Mkata are on the T2 Trunk road from Dar es Salaam to Arusha. [2]

The Zigula or Zigua are a Tanzanian ethnic and linguistic people based northern Pwani Region and southern Tanga Region. In Tanga Region they are the majority in Handeni District and they also have a historically significant population in south of the Pangani River in Pangani District. They speak the Zigula language. In 1993, the Zigua population was estimated to number 355,000 people.
