Hangedup was an experimental rock duo from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, featuring Genevieve Heistek on Viola and Eric Craven on drums and percussion. They combined viola with strong percussion, sometimes using self-made instruments, to create intense experimental Post-rock music. [1]

History

Heistek and Craven performed with the band Sackville. Heistek was also part of The Mile End Ladies String Auxiliary, Set Fire to Flames, HṚṢṬA, and Land of Kush. Craven was associated with Shortwave, HṚṢṬA, and formerly Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band. [2] In 1999 they came together to form Hangedup, and were signed in Montréal by Sackville's label, Constellation Records.

Their first album, self-titled, was recorded at Hotel2Tango studios and released in 2001. [3] [4] [5] In 2002, they released Kicker in Tow. [6] [7] [8] Clatter for Control came out in 2005. [9] [10] [11]

In 2012, Constellation released Musique Fragile 02, a limited-edition boxed set of three vinyl LPs: one each from the bands Kanada 70 and Pacha, and Transit of Venus, a six-track collaborative album by Hangedup and Tony Conrad. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Hangedup performed all over the world. In 2003, it played Barcelona's Primavera Sound Festival. [16] In October 2005, Hangedup joined Patti Smith and Guy Picciotto onstage at Jem Cohen's Fusebox festival in Ghent. [17] In December 2010, the duo appeared at England's All Tomorrow's Parties in Butlin's Minehead. [18]

Also in 2012, Hangedup was featured in And We Made the Room Shine, a film by François Clos and Thomas Lallier about Constellation Records. The film was presented at the 2012 Vienna International Film Festival. [19]

Vanessa Chantal Paradis is a French singer, model, and actress. Paradis became a child star at the age of 14 with the international success of her single Joe le taxi. Pete Tong BBC Radio 1 disc jockey from Dartford, Kent, England

Peter Michael Tong, is an English disc jockey who works for BBC Radio 1. He is the host of programmes such as Essential Mix and Essential Selection on the radio service, which can be heard through Internet radio streams, for his record label FFRR Records and for his own performances at nightclubs and music festivals. Tong has also worked as a record producer and is regarded as the "global ambassador for electronic music."

Exhaust was a Canadian trio from Montreal featuring bass, drums, tape and bass clarinet, active from 1995 to 2012. The members were Aidan Girt (drums), Gordon Krieger and Mike Zabitsky.

Sackville was a Montreal-based musical group that played what has been classified as country and pop, although their style resembles more folk, rock and avantgarde. They formed in 1994 and recorded their first album in 1996.

Autolux American rock band

Autolux is an American alternative rock band consisting of Eugene Goreshter, Greg Edwards and Carla Azar. The trio formed in 2001 and have released three full-length albums, Future Perfect (2004), Transit Transit (2010) and Pussy's Dead (2016). Their eclectic sound draws from post-punk, electronic music and krautrock.

Hrsta is a Montreal post-rock band currently signed to Constellation Records. The band's leader, Mike Moya, was one of the founding members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Hrsta's sound has been compared to that of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Set Fire to Flames, owing to Mike Moya's contributions to each. Hrsta, however, differs from these previous projects in that it features Moya as a vocalist.

Conrad ("Conny") Schnitzler was a prolific German experimental musician associated with West Germany's 1970s krautrock movement. A co-founder of West Berlin's Zodiak Free Arts Lab, he was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. He left Kluster in 1971, first working with his group Eruption and then focusing on solo works. Schnitzler participated in several collaborations with other electronic musicians.

Aidan Girt is a Canadian drummer for the Montreal-based post-rock collectives Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Exhaust. He is also a solo electronic artist under the names OSB, 1-Speed Bike, and Bottleskup Flenkenkenmike and continues to record in Some Became Hollow Tubes.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Canadian band

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra is a Canadian post-rock band that formed in 1999, originating from Montreal, Quebec. Variations of the name used on the band's releases include A Silver Mt. Zion, The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band, The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band with Choir and Thee Silver Mountain Reveries; the group uses the shorthand SMZ and its name is most often simplified to Silver Mt. Zion. The group has undergone almost yearly personnel changes, evolving by stages from a mostly instrumental trio at the time of its first recordings into an eight-piece group, and then in 2008 into a strongly vocal quintet.

Thick Records is a Chicago-based independent record label which actively operated from 1994 to 2007. It now exists as a catalog only label for its previous releases.

Pacha Group is a Spanish holding company specialized in the leisure, entertainment and hospitality businesses. It was founded in 1966 by Ricardo Urgell.

Mike Moya Canadian rock musician

Mike Moya is a Canadian rock musician, who is one of the founding members of post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. He left the band in 1998 to concentrate on his other bands Molasses, Set Fire to Flames and HṚṢṬA., but rejoined the band during their reunion in 2010. He was part of the live band of labelmate Elizabeth Anka Vajagic. He lives between Berlin and Montreal with his partner Maria Hinze and their family.
