Hannah Irwin (born 23 June 1998) is a British long-distance runner. She competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games over 10,000m representing Northern Ireland. That year, she set a new Northern Irish national record for the 10,000m. In 2023, she set a new Northern Irish national record for the half marathon. [1]

Early life

From Cambridge, Irwin studied English with Creative Writing at Surrey University, and writes poetry in her spare time. Irwin recovered from an anaemia diagnosis in 2017. [2] In 2020 Irwin write about overcoming problems with disordered eating when she was younger. [3]

Career

Irwin made her British debut in June 2022 at the European 10,000m Cup, where the British team came home with a bronze medal. [4] Prior to that, Irwin had ran a new personal best and set a new Northern Ireland record of 32:25.34 for the 10,000m competing at the Night of the 10,000m PBs at Parliament Hill in May 2022. [5] [6] In June 2022 Irwin set a new 5000m personal best of 15:45.87 at the Woodside Stadium in Watford. [7]

Irwin was selected as path of the Northern Ireland squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. [8] However, she did not finish the 10,000m race at the event. [9] She was later diagnosed with a metatarsal fracture which prevented her competing for several months. [10]

In August 2023, she broke the Northern Irish national record for the half marathon, running 1:11:05 in County Antrim. [11]

The 10,000 metres or the 10,000-metre run is a common long-distance track running event. The event is part of the athletics programme at the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, and is common at championship-level events. The race consists of 25 laps around an Olympic-sized track. It is less commonly held at track and field meetings due to its duration. The 10,000-metre track race is usually distinguished from its road running counterpart, the 10K run, by referring to the distance in metres rather than kilometres.

She is a two-time world champion after winning the 5000 m in 2017 and again in 2019, when she set a new championship record. Obiri also took world bronze for the 1500 metres in 2013 and silver in the 10,000 m in 2022. She won the 3000 metres race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She is the 2019 World Cross Country champion. Obiri triumphed in the 2023 Boston Marathon, her second marathon race. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world all-time list.

Eilish McColgan is a Scottish middle- and long-distance runner. She is the 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres champion with the Games record, and 5000 metres silver medallist. McColgan is a four-time European Championships medallist, winning silver medals for the 5000 m in 2018 and 10,000 m in 2022, bronze in the 5000 m in 2022, and a bronze for the indoor 3000 metres in 2017. She is the European record holder for the 10 km road race, and the British record holder for the 5000 m, 10,000 m, 5 km and half marathon. She also holds the European best in the 10 miles on the roads.

Sifan Hassan is an Ethiopian-born Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She is most recognized for her versatility in running championship and world leading performances in widely disparate distances. She completed an unprecedented triple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold medals in both the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres and a bronze medal for the 1500 metres. Hassan is the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals across a middle-distance event and both long-distance races in a single Games. She is only the second woman to complete an Olympic distance double.

The Birmingham International Marathon was a long-distance running event held in Birmingham, UK. It formed part of the Great Run British Marathon Series. The first event was held on 15 October 2017, the same day as the existing Great Birmingham Run in the city centre. The event was cancelled the following year, with organisers blaming the city's ongoing roadworks.

Rachel Cliff is a Canadian long-distance runner. She competed in the women's 10,000 meters at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. In 2018, she set the Canadian record with a time of 1:10:08 in The Woodlands Half-Marathon, in March 2018. The same year, Cliff also secured the fastest ever debut-marathon by a Canadian woman when finishing the 2018 Berlin Marathon in 11th place. She won the bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2018 NACAC Championships and placed 9th at both the 2015 Universiade 5000m in Korea, as well as the 10,000m at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the Nagoya Women's 2019 Marathon, she set the Canadian record, running the Japanese marathon as only her second career marathon ever.
