Hannele Ruohola-Baker (born December 10, 1959) is a Professor of Biochemistry and Associate Director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Her research focuses on the molecular biology of stem cells and on the use of Drosophila (fruit flies) as model organisms for human diseases. [1] [2]
Ruohola-Baker was born in the small village of Kullaa, Finland in 1959. She received her bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Helsinki and received her Ph.D. in cell biology from Yale University in 1989, [3] studying cellular transport and advised by Susan Ferro-Novick. She then moved to a visiting fellowship at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and subsequently to a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco with Yuh Nung and Lily Jan. Ruohola-Baker began her faculty career at the University of Washington in 1993 and became a full professor in 2004. She held a Pew Scholars grant from 1996-2000. [5]
Ruohola-Baker's research focuses on stem cells and the molecular requirements for differentiation, with particular interest in the role of microRNA and in the relationship between metabolism and epigenetic changes in different types of stem cells. The research group also has a long-standing interest in studying the Notch and S1P signaling pathway using Drosophila as models of human diseases, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy and cancer. Ruohola-Baker is married to fellow UW biochemist David Baker, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. [5]

He is a professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he served as president from 1997 to 2006. He founded the Whitehead Institute and directed it from 1982 to 1990. Elaine V. Fuchs is an American cell biologist known for her work on the biology and molecular mechanisms of mammalian skin and skin diseases, who helped lead the modernization of dermatology. Fuchs pioneered reverse genetics approaches, which assess protein function first and then assess its role in development and disease. In particular, Fuchs researches skin stem cells and their production of hair and skin. She is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor of Mammalian Cell Biology and Development at The Rockefeller University.
David Baker is an American biochemist and computational biologist who has pioneered methods to design proteins and predict their three-dimensional structures. He is the Henrietta and Aubrey Davis Endowed Professor in Biochemistry, an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and an adjunct professor of genome sciences, bioengineering, chemical engineering, computer science, and physics at the University of Washington. He was awarded the shared 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on computational protein design.
Philippa "Pippa" Marrack, FRS is an English immunologist and academic, based in the United States, best known for her research and discoveries pertaining to T cells. Utpal Banerjee is a distinguished professor of the department of molecular, cell and developmental biology at UCLA. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, India and obtained his Master of Science degree in physical chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. Brian David Dynlacht, is an American biochemist and professor in the department of pathology of New York University Grossman School of Medicine at NYU Langone Health. Before moving his lab to New York University, he was an associate professor in the department of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University. In 2002, while researching at the Harvard University, Dynlacht reported the discovery of CP110, which is now thought to be at the center of a molecular switch governing the centriole to ciliary transition in mammalian cells. His lab identified the first centriolar deubiquitinating enzyme, USP33, whose expression regulates centrosome biogenesis via deubiquitination of the centriolar protein CP110, and thus regulates the centrosome duplication.
Ruth Lehmann is a developmental and cell biologist. She is the Director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. She previously was affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine, where she was the Director of the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Professor of Cell Biology, and the Chair of the Department of Cell Biology. Ruth Speel Van de Water is an assistant physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. She was also named a finalist in the postdoctoral category of the New York Academy of Sciences’ Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in 2011.
