Only 1,000 copies were released originally in Norway. A reissue of the record was released in early 1993 in Germany by Repulsion Records titled Helta Skelta. The reissue features four extra tracks and a 24 minute audio-play about a young man being raped by a policeman called "A Career in Indierock". In 2000, Bitzcore Records reissued a remastered edition of Hot Cars & Spent Contraceptives along with other early Turbonegro records. The reissue was released in June 2000 and featured a new cover art by Dimitri 'from Oslo' Kayiambakis. It contained all the tracks from the original version and as well as the second reissue Helta Skelta.

Magenta is an industrial rock/alternative rock band from Norway formed by Vilde Lockert and Anders Odden during the summer of 1995. They released their first EP, Magenta in 1997. The song "Secret Sky" entered the charts in Norway and established their career. Co-founder Anders Odden was already known in musical circles. He has been a member of bands like Cadaver and Celtic Frost. He is currently also the bassplayer for Satyricon, and guitarplayer for ORDER.

The compilation mainly focuses on the studio albums the band released in the 1980s, from TNT (1982) to Intuition (1989). Guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø had suggested for the inclusion of several tracks from the 1992 album Realized Fantasies, however only the single "Downhill Racer" was included. No material was included from the band's most recent albums at the time, Firefly (1997) and Transistor (1999). The compilation also includes two newly recorded tracks, "Hey Love" and "Satellite", and an outtake from the Tell No Tales sessions, "Destiny".
