Harapanahalli is a city and a taluk in Vijayanagara District in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the sub-division and administrative headquarters of the Harapanahalli Taluk.

In 1947, the 30th Kannada Sahithya Sammelana was organised in Harapanahalli under the presidency of C. K. Venkataramayya.

Geography

It has an average elevation of 633 metres (2076 feet) away from the sea level. Harapanahalli is surrounded by several districts like Davanagere in the South, Chithradurga in the Southeast, Haveri in the West. Harapanahalli had operated under Bellari, Davanagere districts and Now it is operating under Vijayanagara District.

"Haripura" was the old name of Harapanahalli. and it has a sub divisional headquarter considering Harapanahalli, Huvinahadagali and Kotturu taluks with Assistant Commissioner office. It had 144 villages in its taluk boundary, and it is one of the oldest and highest revenue generating center with high trading and educational outposts since from Madras Presidency.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [2] Harapanahalli had a population of 41,889. Males constituted 52% of the population and females 48%. Harapanahalli had an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 60%, and female literacy was 48%. 14% of the population was under 6 years of age.

Harapanahalli has a good road connectivity. with a state highways and state highway 25 is proposed for Upgradation to National Highway. SH-25, SH-02, SH-47, and SH-150 passes through the city. Harapanahalli is operated under KKRTC also has a bus depot here, under Hosapete division. The bus services are being provided to most of the villages of Harapanahalli, Davanagere, Hadagali, Haveri, Ranebennur, Kudligi, Kottur, Hagaribommanahalli, Sandur, Bellary and Harihar taluks. the buses are operated to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mangaluru, Mantralayam, Srisailam, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Madikeri, Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Bellary, Panjim, Mysuru, Hubblli, Bidar, Bagalkot, Sholhapur, Gadag, Haveri, Karwar, Raichur, Sindhanur, Gangavathi, Hosapete, Davanagere, Shivamogga, Kundapur etc.

Railway Transportation

Harapanahalli has a railway station which is in city limits. The railway station is called Harapanahalli Railway Station and the (Station Code: HPHI) which is operating under Mysuru division of Southwestern Railways. It is a single track diesel line. And it lies in Hosapete - Davanagere section of South Western Railways of Mysuru and Hubballi divisions. Currently 6 trains are operating through this station. New survey of Gadag Junction - Harapanahalli 93 km railway line project physical survey is completed the report is submitted to SWR board UBL (Hubballi) & it was considered. The SWR board has Invites a Electrification Tender for this section.

Airway Transportation

The nearest Airport from Harapanahalli is Jindal Vijayanagara Airport (IATA:VDY) at Toranagallu. which is at a distance of around 94 km along the fastest route. Flights are available from here to all the major Indian metropolis cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Mangaluru, Panajim, and Hubballi. The Hubballi Airport (IATA:HBX) is 152 km far away and The Kempegowda International airport (IATA:BLR) Bengaluru is 302 km far from here.

The Bangalore–Arsikere–Hubli line is a major railway line in the Indian state of Karnataka connecting state capital Bangalore with city of Hubballi in north-central Karnataka. It traverses across Karnataka and links several cities of Karnataka, including Tumakuru, Kadur, Davanagere, Haveri and Hubballi. Currently, 29 pairs of trains operate in this route, out of which 8 are daily services. Gadag Junction railway station is a NSG-4 Category railway station under South Western Railway in Gadag district, Karnataka. It serves Gadag-Betageri. The station consists of 3 platforms. The station lies on Guntakal–Vasco da Gama section HDN-7A | and as well as it connects Gadag–Hotgi railway line.The Gadag–Hotgi railway line was converted from metre gauge to broad gauge in December 2008. Amenities at Gadag railway station include: Escalators at PF-1 & PF2, Elevators at PF-1 & PF2, Coach Positioning display, computerized reservation office, waiting room, retiring room, free Wi-Fi facility, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshments, and book stall.
