Harapanahalli is a town, taluk and is one of the two sub-divisional headquarter in the Vijayanagara District in the Indian state of Karnataka.
In 1947, the 30th Kannada Sahithya Sammelana was organised in Harapanahalli under the presidency of C. K. Venkataramayya.
It has an average elevation of 633 metres (2,077 ft) above the Mean sea level. Harapanahalli is surrounded by several districts like Davanagere in the South, Chithradurga in the Southeast, Haveri in the West.
Previously, Harapanahalli was under Ballari district, Davangere district and then transferred back to Ballari, until the Vijayanagara district was carved out in the year 2021.
"Haripura" was the old name of Harapanahalli. and it has a sub divisional headquarter considering Harapanahalli, Huvinahadagali and Kotturu taluks with Assistant Commissioner office. It had 144 villages in its taluk boundary, and it is one of the oldest and highest revenue generating center with high trading and educational outposts since from Madras Presidency.
As of 2001 [update] India census, [2] Harapanahalli had a population of 41,889. Males constituted 52% of the population and females 48%. Harapanahalli had an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 60%, and female literacy was 48%. 14% of the population was under 6 years of age.
Harapanahalli has a good road connectivity. with a state highways and state highway 25 is proposed for Upgradation to National Highway. SH-25, SH-2, SH-47 and SH-150 passes through the town. Harapanahalli is operated under KKRTC also has a bus depot here, under Hospet division. The bus services are being provided to most of the villages of Harapanahalli, Davanagere, Hadagali, Haveri, Ranebennur, Kudligi, Kottur, Hagaribommanahalli, Sandur, Bellary and Harihar taluks. the buses are operated to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mangalore, Mantralayam, Srisailam, Kalaburgi, Bijapur, Madikeri, Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Bellary, Panaji, Mysore, Hubli, Bidar, Bagalkot, Sholhapur, Gadag, Haveri, Karwar, Raichur, Sindhanur, Gangavathi, Hospet, Davanagere, Shimoga, Kundapur etc.
Harapanahalli has a railway station which is in town limits. The railway station is called Harapanahalli Railway Station and the (Station Code: HPHI) which is operating under Mysore division of Southwestern Railways. It is a single track diesel line. And it lies in Hospet - Davanagere section of South Western Railways of Mysore and Hubli divisions. Currently 6 trains are operating through this station. Dharwad railway station formerly known as Dharwar railway station is a major station under Hubli railway division of South Western Railway zone of Indian Railways situated in Dharwad, Karnataka. It is in top 10 station in South Western Railway (SWR). It is one of the busiest railway station in the state.
