The Harlington Locomotive Society, [1] [2] also informally known as the Harlington Miniature Railway, is a trestle railway about half a mile in length through an old orchard in the village of Harlington, London Borough of Hillingdon, Greater London.
The track's site, set in an orchard, was donated to the society many years ago,[ when? ] and is east of the High Street, Harlington. [3]
The club has a large circuit of track of both 5 in (127 mm) and 3+1⁄2 in (89 mm) gauge incorporating a small tunnel, a clubhouse with kitchen and workshop, powered steaming bays and a brick built station and signal box. It has some resemblance to the Parkreisen of the BRD and the Pionerbahn of the DDR, though the facility is for the use of adult hobbyists and does not have the didactic purpose of training potential future railway employees.
Service facilities are located in the centre of the western loop of the track. Locomotives are steamed there and then switched into the running line on a turntable. A facility for checking boiler pressure performance is located here.
As early as the 1950s, the railway incorporated a treadle operated signalling system to regulate the traffic. The weight of the wheels operated the treadles, which caused the signal behind to change to red and being cleared to green at the next treadle along the line.
Besides a membership scheme it is frequently open to the public on the second and fourth Sundays of each month between April and October and trips are afforded for a relatively small charge. [4]
The route encircles the orchard, and is of a figure eight shape, though the arms of the "8" do not cross. Both 3+1⁄2 in (89 mm) and 5 in (127 mm) gauge locomotives can be run on the line, which is dual gauge. The passenger cars which straddle the line are of 5 in gauge.
The local area had many engineering companies (or companies employing engineers) including HMV, later EMI, the Aeolian Company's Factory and Fairey Aviation and the engineering facilities of Heathrow Airport are near at hand. These companies provided an extensive potential membership base that has provided a willing and expert membership. Most of the surrounding land has been developed as relatively low cost housing, and the HLS pays deference to the history of the local area, before urbanisation, one of market gardens and orchards, serving London, whilst finding a novel use as a leisure facility.
Coverage in the specialist railway and children's press is longstanding, and Arthur Mee's Children's Newspaper carried a long article about the railway in the 1950s.
A narrow-gauge railway is a railway with a track gauge narrower than standard 1,435 mm. Most narrow-gauge railways are between 600 mm and 1,067 mm.
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is a 15 in minimum gauge heritage railway in Cumbria, England. The 7-mile (11.3 km) line runs from Ravenglass to Dalegarth Station near Boot in the valley of Eskdale, in the Lake District. At Ravenglass the line ends at Ravenglass railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line.
The Great Western Main Line (GWML) is a main line railway in England that runs westwards from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. It connects to other main lines such as those from Reading to Penzance and Swindon to Swansea. Opened in 1841, it was the original route of the first Great Western Railway which was merged into the Western Region of British Railways in 1948. It is now a part of the national rail system managed by Network Rail with the majority of passenger services provided by the current Great Western Railway franchise.

The Bala Lake Railway is a narrow-gauge railway along the southern shore of Bala Lake in Gwynedd, North Wales. The line, which is 4+1⁄2 miles (7.2 km) long, is built on a section of the former standard-gauge Ruabon–Barmouth GWR route that closed in 1965. Another section of the former permanent way is used by the Llangollen Railway. The Bala Lake Railway, which runs on 600 mm -gauge preserved rolling stock, is a member of the Great Little Trains of Wales.
Rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria is provided by a number of railway operators who operate over the government-owned railway lines. The network consists of 2,357 km of Victorian broad gauge lines, and 1,912 km of standard gauge freight and interstate lines; the latter increasing with gauge conversion of the former. Historically, a few experimental 762 mm gauge lines were built, along with various private logging, mining and industrial railways. The rail network radiates from the state capital, Melbourne, with main interstate links to Sydney and to Adelaide, as well as major lines running to regional centres, upgraded as part of the Regional Fast Rail project.
A garden railroad or garden railway is a model railway system set up outdoors in a garden. While G is the most popular scale for garden railroads, 16 mm scale has a dedicated and growing following especially in the UK. Model locomotives in this scale are often live steam scale models of British narrow gauge prototypes. 16 mm scale track, the same gauge as O gauge is probably now more popular in the UK than G scale.
The Fairbourne Railway is a 12+1⁄4 in gauge miniature railway running for 2 miles (3.2 km) from the village of Fairbourne on the Mid-Wales coast, alongside the beach to the end of a peninsula at Barmouth Ferry railway station, where there is a connection with the Barmouth Ferry across the Mawddach estuary to the seaside resort of Barmouth.
The majority of Indonesia's railways are on Java, used for both passenger and freight transport. There are three noncontinuous railway networks in Sumatra while two new networks are being developed in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Indonesia has finalized its plan for a national railway network recently. According to the plan, 3,200 km of train tracks that will criss-cross the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, it has been touted as the most extensive railway project in Indonesia since its independence from the Dutch in 1945. Indonesia targets to extend the national railway network to 10,524 kilometres by 2030. As of September 2022, the network spans 7,032km.
The Longmoor Military Railway (LMR) was a British military railway in Hampshire, built by the Royal Engineers from 1903 in order to train soldiers on railway construction and operations. The railway ceased operation on 31 October 1969.
The Garw Valley Railway is the trading name of the Bridgend Valleys Railway Company Limited. It operates a short section of 4 ft 8+1⁄2 instandard gauge railway located in South Wales, which is being recreated as a heritage railway. Formerly part of the Llynvi and Ogmore Railway (L&OR) and built by the Great Western Railway (GWR), the line was used for freight and passenger services, with most of the track still in place between Brynmenyn and Pontycymer. The project currently has a train shed at Pontycymer, and hopes to initially offer brake van rides between Pontycymer and Pant-y-Gog, a distance of 0.5 miles (0.8 km).
A ridable miniature railway is a large scale, usually ground-level railway that hauls passengers using locomotives that are often models of full-sized railway locomotives.
Saltwood Miniature Railway was a 7+1⁄4 in gauge miniature railway which first opened in Sheffield, but subsequently relocated to Saltwood in Kent, England. It closed in 1987.
The Strawberry Line is a 0.75-mile (1.21 km) length of 5 in gauge railway inside Avon Valley Country Park. It is Britain's only commercial ground-level 5 in railway. As a conventional ridable miniature railway it provides train rides for visitors to the park. Strawberry Line Miniature Railway underwent a major overhaul during the 2020/2021 off season and is now operating a 7 1/4" gauge circuit to accommodate the increased footfall and popularity seen over the last few years. A 7 1/4" line is more commercially used throughout the UK and is more robust, sturdier and safer to operate.
The Leighton Buzzard Light Railway (LBLR) is a light railway in Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, England. It operates on 2 ft narrow-gauge track and is just under 3 miles (4.8 km) long. The line was built after the First World War to serve sand quarries north of the town. In the late 1960s the quarries switched to road transport and the railway was taken over by volunteers, who now run the line as a heritage railway.
The Ambarawa Railway Museum, is a museum located in Ambarawa in Central Java, Indonesia. The museum focuses on the collection of steam locomotives, the remains of the closing of the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) railway line.
Neasden Depot is a London Underground depot located in Neasden in the London Borough of Brent, between Neasden and Wembley Park stations on the Metropolitan line. It is the largest depot on the London Underground, and is currently responsible for maintenance and overhaul of the 191 S Stock trains used on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.
Mizens Railway is a 7¼ inch gauge miniature railway located in a 10-acre site near Woking in Surrey, England. The railway comprises three routes, the longest being nearly 1 mile long. A variety of locomotives are in use, including several steam engines.
Wythall miniature railway is a dual-gauge miniature railway in the grounds of The Transport Museum, Wythall in England. It is operated and maintained by Elmdon Model Engineering Society (EMES)
Harrogate Gasworks Railway was an industrial railway in the town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. The line was a narrow gauge railway that ran between Bilton Junction on the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, to the Harrogate Gas Company's (HGC) works at New Park, north of the town centre. It opened in 1908 to carry inbound coal for gasification, and was closed to traffic in 1956. The railway was noted for its tight gauge restrictions in the tunnel through New Park. Two of its steam locomotives have survived into preservation, and are still in use on heritage railways.
