The Harry Jerome Award is a Canadian award given to Black Canadians, established in 1983. The award is named after Harry Jerome and organized by the Black Business and Professional Association.

The award is organized by the Black Business and Professional Association [1] and presented at an award ceremony in Toronto. [2]

The award was launched in 1983 and is named after the Black olympian [3] and racial equity activist Harry Jerome. [4] The award is "widely considered among the most prestigious honours in Canada's black communities". [5]

History

In 2015, Tamar Huggins was among 15 winners. [3] At the 35th award ceremony in 2017, 18 awardees were announced, including Andre De Grasse. [6]

The 41st awards occurred in 2023, [1] notable awardees included Andria Case, Lindell Wigginton and Ngozi Paul. [4]

They were originally called the Gold Leaf Awards, and the trophy resembled a metronome. "Harry" Winston Jerome was a Canadian track and field sprinter and physical education teacher. He won a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and set a total of seven world records over the course of his career.

Trey Anthony is a British-born Canadian playwright, actor, and producer, best known for her award-winning play and television series Da Kink in My Hair. As a producer, she worked for the Women's Television Network and the Urban Women's Comedy Festival. The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are awards presented annually by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), honouring theatre, dance and opera productions in Toronto. Andre De Grasse is a Canadian sprinter. A six-time Olympic medalist, De Grasse is the 2020 Olympic champion in the 200 m, and also won the silver in the 200 m in 2016. He won a second silver in the 4×100 relay in 2020. He also has three Olympic bronze medals, placing third in the 100 m at both the 2016 and 2020 Games, and also in the 4×100 m relay in 2016.

Valerie Jerome is an African-Canadian retired Track and Field sprinter, educator, and political activist. She competed in the women's 100 metres at the 1960 Summer Olympics. She finished third in the 1959 Pan American Games 4 × 100 metres relay. Jerome also finished seventh in the 1959 Pan American Games long jump. Jerome is the only Canadian athlete to compete in five track and field events in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or Pan-American Games. She is the sister of Harry Jerome and the granddaughter of John "Army" Howard.

The Donald Brittain Award is a Canadian television award, presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to honour the year's best television documentary on a social or political topic. Formerly presented as part of the Gemini Awards, since 2013 it has been presented as part of the Canadian Screen Awards. She was the first visible minority woman to run for the federal Conservative Party leadership. She is known for her socially conservative views.
