Hassan Basajjabalaba (born 4 June 1967) is a Ugandan businessman, investor and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder, chairman, and CEO of the HABA Group of Companies, A large conglomerate in East Africa with an estimated value of $520M [1]

Early life

Hassan was born into a wealthy Banyankole Muslim family on 4 June 1967. His father, the late Idd Basajjabalaba, was the son of a businessman involved in the export of hides and skins, farming, cattle keeping, and education. [2] According to the New Vision newspaper His father was also one of the largest landowners in Bushenyi District, located in the western part of the country. [3] Hassan attended secondary school in Bushenyi but dropped out just before his final year to focus on expanding and growing the family business after his father's passing in the early 1980s. This was also around the same time the country was heavily impacted by the coup d'état that overthrew President Obote and brought the current president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power. Business career

HABA Group of Companies began as a trading firm in 1986, established shortly after the death of Hassan's father. Hassan focused on the realms of education and the hides and skins industry. [5]

Today, Kampala International University is one of the largest Private Universities in Africa, with international operations in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda with Study centres across Uganda. HABA Group of Companies has moved from being a trading company to being the largest group in Uganda, encompassing divisions like; Sugar Refinery, Tea Plantations and Factories in Butare and Buhweju, and Pharmaceutical Factory, Hospitals, Real-estate. [6]

In 2009, Hassan approached Kampala City Council Authority - KCCA to lease Nakasero and Owino markets in Kampala, which was approved. The Management of the markets immediately commenced the process of rebuilding and major improvements around the markets which promoted rental increments that were passed on to the vendors. The later resulted in major strikes across the city and the president was left with no choice but to issue directive that led to the cancellation of the contract prompting the government to compensate Basajjabalaba billions of Shillings. [7]

She in the process of launching the first sugar factory in Northern Uganda. With successful business ventures throughout Uganda she has become a beacon of hope and a motivating role model for young African girls.

Ishaka is a town in the Western Region of Uganda. It is one of the municipalities in Bushenyi District.

Kampala International University School of Health Sciences is the school of health sciences of Kampala International University, a private Ugandan university. The school provides health sciences education at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Margaret Nantongo Zziwa is a Ugandan politician and legislator. She served as the Speaker of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania. She was elected to serve in that capacity in June 2012. She was impeached and voted out of office on 17 December 2014, on charges of misconduct and abuse of office, but was later awarded compensation for illegal removal.

Frederick Mutebi Kitaka, is a Ugandan physicist, mathematician, accountant, entrepreneur, and industrialist. He is the executive director of finance at Quality Chemical Industries Limited (QCIL), a Ugandan limited liability company. QCIL is the only Sub-Saharan pharmaceutical company that is licensed to manufacture triple therapy antiretroviral medication. He is also a shareholder in the company and sits on its board of directors.

Alykhan Karmali is an entrepreneur, industrialist, and philanthropist in Uganda. He is the managing director of Mukwano Industries Uganda Limited, a member company of the Mukwano Group. He also served as a non-executive director of Exim Bank (Uganda), a commercial bank in which the Mukwano Group maintains 36.5 percent stake.

Mukesh Shukla, commonly referred to as Shumuk, is a businessman, entrepreneur, and politician in Uganda. He was reported in 2012 to be one of the wealthiest individuals in Uganda.

She among the Members of Parliament who were awarded the Golden Jubilee Medals on October 9th 2012.
