Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, not-for-profit institution based in Uganda. It was established in 2001 and assumed chartered status in 2009.[ citation needed ] [1]

In pursuit of the dream to raise the next generation of problem solvers for the East African region and indeed the whole of Africa, the University operates a multi-campus system which consists of two campuses in Uganda (the main campus in Kampala and the western campus in Ishaka-Bushenyi); one other university in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, while a third one is being developed in Nairobi, Kenya.[ citation needed ] The University which started as a typical degree-awarding institution has now grown into the number one Private University in Uganda and is currently ranked number 2 in the country according to the 2022 Webometric Ranking, out of 68 universities. [2] It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of Africa Universities as well as the Inter University-Council of East Africa. The University offers a variety of programmes in Health Sciences, Science and Technology, Engineering, Business and Management, Law, Humanities and Education.[ citation needed ]

Location

KIU has its main campus at Kansanga, a location in Makindye Division in the south-eastern part of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The campus is approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) south-east of Kampala's central business district, along the road to Ggaba. The coordinates of the campus are 0°17'41.0"N, 32°36'13.0"E (Latitude:0.294722; Longitude:32.603611). [3]

Kampala International University Western Campus is located in Ishaka in Bushenyi District, about 328 kilometres (204 mi), by road, south-west of Kampala. [4]

KIU maintains a third campus, the KIU Dar es Salaam Constituent College, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, not-for-profit institution based in Uganda. It was established in 2001 and received its university charter in March 2009. [5]

Main campus

KIU's main campus has three constituent colleges and three schools and one directorate [6]

This is the largest of the three campuses, hosting more than 7,000 students and over 300 academic staff.[ citation needed ]

Western campus

The Western Campus in Ishaka has 4 schools and 1 faculty

  5. Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Dentistry

This campus houses over 5,000 students supervised by over 200 academic staff.[ citation needed ]

Certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs are offered at this campus. It is predominantly a science-based institution.

The School of Health Sciences is located on the western campus. The school is one of Uganda's seven medical schools, and it was the first privately owned medical school in the country. [7] The school offers programmes in medicine, dentistry, nursing, medical laboratory technology, education, business, and management and information technology. The school has a teaching hospital with a bed capacity of 1,200. [8] [9]

Dar es Salaam campus

This campus is housed on 100 acres (40 ha) in the Gongolamboto area in Ilala District, along Pugu Road. The campus is approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from Julius Nyerere International Airport. [10]

2013 government investigation

In 2013, the Ugandan National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) began an investigation into whether the 42 Doctorates of Philosophy (PhDs) awarded by KIU up to that time had met NCHE's requirements. At the end of the investigation in November 2013, NCHE declared that the PhDs were legitimate. [11]

Muteesa I Royal University (MRU) is a private university in Uganda. It was accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education in 2007 and chartered in March 2024. In 2016, Justice Julia Sebutinde was installed as Chancellor of the University, replacing Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the founding chancellor who became Visitor of the university.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Ishaka is a town in the Western Region of Uganda. It is one of the municipalities in Bushenyi District.

Kampala International University School of Health Sciences is the school of health sciences of Kampala International University, a private Ugandan university. The school provides health sciences education at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Ishaka Adventist Hospital is a rural hospital in Uganda. The hospital is located in the town of Ishaka, Bushenyi District, Western Uganda. It is located immediately north of the junction where the Ishaka–Kagamba Road meets the Mbarara–Ishaka Road. It is approximately 61 kilometres (38 mi) west of Mbarara, the largest city in the sub-region. This location lies approximately 329 kilometres (204 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the largest city in that country. Tolly Salvatory Augustine Mbwette was a Tanzanian academic, engineer and educator. He held various positions in national and international institutions of higher learning over his lifetime, including that of vice chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania. He was a team leader for various multi-disciplinary research teams responsible for both drinking and wastewater treatment systems that rely on bio-systems.
