Rubaga Community School is a primary school located on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital of the African Great Lakes country of Uganda.
The school was established in the mid-1980s by Jjajja Manjeri, an elderly woman who took in 3 orphans and started educating the children in hopes of providing a future for them. [1] Because of her work in the community, more children who were in difficult circumstances were sent to Jjajja Manjeri. The school, today known as Rubaga Community School, has since progressed and has gone from educating children under a tree to having multiple classrooms.
The school has governmental approval and certification as an educational institution, but it receives no economic support from the state. Locals run the daily operations with help from international NGOs like International Child Welfare Service [2] and Rubaga Friends. [3]
The schools classes span from nursery school to primary 7 and all together it has 280 students. Some of the students are orphans and live at the school on full boarding.
Historically, an orphanage is a residential institution, or group home, devoted to the care of orphans and other children who were separated from their biological families. Examples of what would cause a child to be placed in orphanages are when the parents were deceased, the biological family was abusive to the child, there was substance abuse or mental illness in the biological home that was detrimental to the child, or the parents had to leave to work elsewhere and were unable or unwilling to take the child. The role of legal responsibility for the support of children whose parent(s) have died or are otherwise unable to provide care differs internationally.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a piece of American legislation that ensures students with a disability are provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is tailored to their individual needs. IDEA was previously known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) from 1975 to 1990. In 1990, the United States Congress reauthorized EHA and changed the title to IDEA. Overall, the goal of IDEA is to provide children with disabilities the same opportunity for education as those students who do not have a disability.
Mainstreaming, in the context of education, is the practice of placing students with special education services in a general education classroom during specific time periods based on their skills. To clarify, this means students who are a part of the special education classroom will join the regular education classroom at certain times which are fitting for the special education student. These students may attend art or physical education in the regular education classrooms. Sometimes these students will attend math and science in a separate classroom, but attend English in a general education classroom. Schools that practice mainstreaming believe that students with special needs who cannot function in a general education classroom to a certain extent belong in the special education environment.

Raising Malawi is a charity non-profit organization that was founded by Madonna and Michael Berg in 2006. It is dedicated to helping with the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's one million orphans, primarily through health and education programming. Initially, the "Raising Malawi Academy for Girls" was to be constructed but following an audit by the Global Philanthropy Group, which questioned expenditure on salaries and benefits as well as the management capacity and culture, the charity's school headmistress resigned in October 2010 and the project was scrapped.
Singapore Sign Language, or SgSL, is the native sign language used by the deaf and hard of hearing in Singapore, developed over six decades since the setting up of the first school for the Deaf in 1954. Founded in 1989 in Houston, Texas and with an office opened in North Texas in 2011, the organization focuses on the well-being of children and educates legislators on the importance of key children's issues. While focusing on a variety of issues, the primary issues are human trafficking, food insecurity, education, and parenting. CHILDREN AT RISK also has a North Texas office in Dallas. Founded in 1959 as International Orphans, Inc. by Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, Childhelp is one of the largest non-profit child abuse prevention and treatment organizations in the nation. It operates facilities in California, Virginia, Tennessee, and Arizona. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline services all of the United States, its territories and Canada. The Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga are the members of a Catholic religious institute of Religious Brothers which was founded in Uganda in 1927. They are dedicated to the care of youth, traditionally through education, but they currently also serve in the areas of the care of children suffering from or orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. They follow the Ignatian spirituality. Locally they are called the Bannakaroli Brothers, so named in honor of the leader of the Martyrs of Uganda, St. Charles Lwanga.
