Kabale University (KAB) is a public university in Kabale Municipality, Uganda.

Location

The main campus of KAB is located on Kikungiri Hill, in Kabale Municipality, on 52 hectares (130 acres) of land donated by the Kabale District Administration. This location is 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) off the Kabale-Katuna/Gatuna Road, approximately 409 kilometres (254 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [4] The coordinates of KAB are 1°16'20.0"S, 29°59'18.0"E (Latitude:-1.272215; Longitude:29.988321). [5]

History

According to Education News Uganda, Kabale University (KAB) was established as a private institution in 2001 by stakeholders in the Kigezi sub-region. [6] The major objective of KAB is to contribute to the socioeconomic development of Kigezi, Uganda, East Africa, Eastern Africa, and Africa through accessible training, research, and decentralized service delivery, using participatory and inclusive approaches and methodologies. [7] KAB received accreditation from the Uganda National Council for Higher Education in 2005. [8] [9]

As of 2012, Kabale University is a Public University, fully owned and governed by the Government of the republic of Uganda. The genesis of this goes back to January 2015, after lobbying from stakeholders, [7] the government of Uganda indicated its willingness to take over the private university, provided certain conditions were met. [10] In June 2015, the government formally took over the university. [11]

Bishop Stuart University (BSU) is a private, not-for-profit, multi-campus university in Uganda.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Victoria University Uganda (VUU), also known as Victoria University Kampala, is a university in Uganda, accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). It offers short, professional, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
