Hospitality management is the study of the hospitality and tourism industries. Degree programs in the field are offered by universities, business schools, and specialized institutions worldwide. [1] Degrees may be referred to as hospitality management, hotel management, tourism management, or hotel administration, and are offered at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including BA, BBA, BSc, MBA, and PhD. The field covers a wide range of sectors, including hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, destination marketing organizations, convention centers, and country clubs. [2]

Curriculum

In the US, hospitality and tourism management curricula follow similar core subject applications to that of a business degree, but with a focus on tourism development and hospitality management. Core subject areas include accounting, administration, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, marketing, human resource management, public relations, strategy, quantitative methods, and sectoral studies in the various areas of hospitality business. Some programs in India also include culinary training. [3]

Many schools have departments that specifically give degrees in the hospitality field.

Rankings of hospitality schools

Hospitality and tourism management programs are regularly assessed in global subject rankings. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject for Hospitality & Leisure Management, Swiss institutions such as École hôtelière de Lausanne, Glion Institute of Higher Education, and Les Roches Global Hospitality Education were ranked among the top globally, alongside the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Hotelschool The Hague in the Netherlands. [4]

Shanghai Ranking’s 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in Hospitality & Tourism Management similarly highlighted Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Griffith University in Australia, and Cornell University in the United States as leading institutions in research and education. [5]
