History

Turkmenistan has 12 years of formal secondary education. [1] Higher education now lasts 5 years. [2] In 2007, there were 1 million children attending secondary schools and around 100,000 started grade 1. [3] In the 2010/2011 academic year, 931,272 students were enrolled in general educational institutions: 373,160 in urban areas and 558,112 in rural areas. There was a total of 1,730 schools – 1,232 in rural and 498 in urban areas (State Committee for Statistics). Some 69,437 teachers were employed. [4] Turkmenistan introduced "12 year Secondary Education Program" in 2012, which is being implemented starting from 2013/2014 academic year. [5]

At the end of the 201920 academic year, nearly 80,000 Turkmen pupils graduated from high school. [6] As of the 201920 academic year, 12,242 of these students were admitted to institutions of higher education in Turkmenistan. An additional 9,063 were admitted to the country's 42 vocational colleges. [7]

Course centers

In 1996, The Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan gave the opportunity for state and private entities to open and operate short term courses.

Currently number of state and private-owned course centers are operating in Turkmenistan. They mainly provide courses in languages, computer skills, mathematics and accounting. They work on license base given by The Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan.

There are more than ten language course centers among which Hemaýat, Diller dünýäsi, Dil merkezi, Gözleg ylym-bilim merkezi, Bagtyýar Ýaşlar, Gujurly Nesil, Päk Nesil, Hukuk, biznes we tehnologiýalar merkezi, Dalçyn, Daýan, Zehinli Nesil, Altyn Göreç, Erenler, Dilkom, Günbatar şapagy, Altyn Sarpa etc.

Universities

There are 23 higher education institutions in Turkmenistan. 18 of these are civil and 5 are military higher education institutions. [8]

Some of the higher education institutions are Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, State Institute of World Languages named after Döwletmämmet Azady, University of Agriculture named after S. A. Niýazow, State Institute of Economy & Management, Institute of Education named after Seýitnazar Seýdi (Turkmenabat), Institute of Electrical Technology (Mary city), State Medical University.

There are 3 international higher education institutions operating in Turkmenistan: International Oil & Gas University, International Relations Institute of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan, International University of Humanities and Development. Despite their "international" naming, they are attended only by Turkmen students.

Military-based higher education institutions: Institute of Ministry of Defence, Institute of Internal Affairs Ministry (alias Police Academy), Institute of Ministry of National Security, Institute of State Border Security.

In June 2021 a new Law on Education was adopted, according to which institutions of higher education are allowed to charge fees for tuition. The government of Turkmenistan has not published a specific date for institutions to shift from free to paid tuition, but some observers anticipate free university tuition will be abolished by 2024. [9] [10] [11] The 2020 national education plan called for "step-by-step transfer of institutions of higher education to self-support with paid tuition." [12]

Postgraduate education

Postgraduate education in Turkmenistan is available at the Turkmen Academy of Sciences, having been restored in 2007. The quota for a postgraduate education is approved by the President of Turkmenistan. In 2013, the graduate school will accept 55 graduates of national universities. Two more budget places will appear in doctoral studies, forty-two in clinical residency, one place will be available for one of 241 candidates for a 'candidate of sciences' degree, nine places for a doctoral degree.

Türkmenbaşy, formerly known as Krasnovodsk, Kyzyl-Su, and Shagadam, is a city in Balkan Province in western Turkmenistan, on the Türkmenbaşy Gulf of the Caspian Sea. It sits at an elevation of 27 metres. The population was 86,800, mostly ethnic Turkmens but also Russian, Armenian and Azeri minorities. As the terminus of the Trans-Caspian Railway and site of a major seaport on the Caspian, it is an important transportation center. The city is also the site of Turkmenistan's largest oil refining complex.

The mass media in Turkmenistan are among the world's most tightly controlled. The press is controlled by the government, which funds nearly all newspapers, criticism of the president is forbidden, and state licensing policy effectively eliminates all outlets not reflecting official views. To avoid reprisal, domestic and foreign journalists engage in self-censorship.

Ahal Änew Football Club, or simply Ahal FK, is a Turkmen professional football club based in the Änew, Ahal Province. Founded in 1989, the club played its first-ever top flight season in 1992. The club plays its home matches at the 20,000 seater Ashgabat Stadium.

Yagshygeldi Ilyasovich Kakayev was a Turkmen politician and energy executive. He was one of the Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan from 2012 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2017. In 2010, he served as acting Deputy Chairman. His career in government was primarily focused on oil and gas matters. From 2007 to 2016, he was the Director of the State Agency for Management of Hydrocarbons.

Berdi Bayrammyradovich Shamyradov or Berdi Baýrammyradowiç Şamyradow is a Turkmen football coach and a former professional player. Currently, he works as assistant manager at FC Nebitçi Balkanabat.

Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics of Turkmenistan is the largest institution of higher education in Turkmenistan, located in the capital of Ashgabat. Founded in 1992, prepares professionals and higher vocational education for railway transport and other sectors of the economy. Its rector was Nurnepes Annaevich Kuliev, until the university was abolished.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan is the chief executive body in Turkmenistan. The Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan is appointed by the President of Turkmenistan who is both the chief of state and head of government. In addition to holding specific portfolios in most cases, six deputy chairpersons of the Cabinet of Ministers may also be assigned responsibility for oversight of a province of Turkmenistan or of the capital city.

Demirýollary open joint-stock company is the state-owned operator of railways in Turkmenistan. The company operates on 4,980 km (3,090 mi) of railways and maintains over 345 railway stations throughout the country. The company belongs to the Ministry of Industry and Construction and is subordinate to the Railways Agency of Turkmenistan. It is headquartered in Ashgabat. While the rail system itself belongs to the railways agency, the Turkmen Railways company owns the locomotive and railcar depots, rail stations, construction and maintenance units, communications and power supply services, and two hotels in Awaza, the Kerwen and Türkmenbaşy.

The State Border Service (SBS) (Turkmen: Döwlet Serhet Gullugy, DSG) also commonly known by its paramilitary force as the Turkmen Border Troops (Türkmenistan Serhet Garawul) is a border guard agency of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan. It is currently a public service department of the government of the country and is under the command of the Ministry for National Security of Turkmenistan.

The 2019 Turkmenistan Higher League season was the 27th season Turkmenistan's professional football league, the highest football league competition in Turkmenistan. Altyn Asyr defended their championship, winning the Higher League for a six time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Turkmen military academies</span>

The Armed Forces of Turkmenistan currently funds 2 high ranking educational institutions: The Military Academy of Turkmenistan and the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan. Aside from those two schools, there are several military schools around the country, specializing in the training of personnel of a branches of service. In the early 1990s when the armed forces were rapidly being developed, many officers were trained in the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense, while at least 300 officers were sent to schools in Turkey. On 3 October 1992, the Turkmen State University created the first Turkmen educational department. This article lists institutions of the Turkmen Armed Forces based on its respective agency and service branch.

Turkmenistan is the only remaining sovereign country in the world that has not reported any cases of COVID-19. There were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan, with the totalitarian government being proactive in censoring relevant information. It is however suspected to have spread in the country unreported; specifics are difficult to ascertain and confirm in absence of independent media.

Events in the year 2020 in Turkmenistan. Unlike other countries in 2020, Turkmenistan has not significantly been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As of 24 April 2020, Turkmenistan has still not had any reported cases of COVID-19. However, many experts claim that the virus may be spreading in the country unreported, due to the government's control on information about the virus.

Colonel General Çarymyrat Kakalyýewiç Amanow is a Turkmenistani general and politician who served until April 2022 in the position of deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers responsible for security, military, and justice and secretary of the State Security Council of Turkmenistan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Turkmenistan presidential election</span>

Early presidential elections were held in Turkmenistan on 12 March 2022. The elections were called after incumbent president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow announced his intention to resign.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Arkadag</span> Capital of Ahal Province, Turkmenistan

Arkadag is a city in southern Turkmenistan. It became the regional capital of Ahal Province effective 20 December 2022. It is a largely greenfield development started in 2019 with an initial budget of $1.5 billion. The city was named in honor of former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who is officially entitled Arkadag. Uniquely among Turkmen cities, Arkadag is by law designated a "city of state importance".
