Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism (MICE tourism) is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually planned well in advance, are brought together. Recently there has been an industry trend toward using the term "meetings industry" to avoid confusion from the acronym. [1] Other industry educators[ who? ] are recommending the use of "events industry" to be an umbrella term for the vast scope of the meeting and events and profession.[ citation needed ]

Most components of MICE are well understood from their names, perhaps with the exception of incentives. Incentive tourism is usually undertaken as a type of employee reward by a company or institution for targets met or exceeded, or a job well done. Unlike the other types of MICE tourism, incentive tourism is usually conducted purely for entertainment, rather than professional or education purposes. [2] MICE events are usually centered on a theme or topic and are aimed at a professional, school, academic or trade organization or other special interest group.[ citation needed ]

Convention bureaus

MICE event locations are normally bid on by specialized convention bureaus in particular countries and cities and established for the purpose of bidding on MICE activities. This process of marketing and bidding is normally conducted well in advance of the event, often several years, as securing major events can benefit the local economy of the host city or country. Convention bureaus may offer financial subsidies to attract MICE events to their city. [3] Today it is usually used to boost hotel revenue.

MICE tourism is known for its extensive planning and demanding clientele. [4]

A convention, in the sense of a meeting, is a gathering of individuals who meet at an arranged place and time in order to discuss or engage in some common interest. The most common conventions are based upon industry, profession, and fandom. Trade conventions typically focus on a particular industry or industry segment, and feature keynote speakers, vendor displays, and other information and activities of interest to the event organizers and attendees. Professional conventions focus on issues of concern along with advancements related to the profession. Such conventions are generally organized by societies or communities dedicated to promotion of the topic of interest. Fan conventions usually feature displays, shows, and sales based on pop culture and guest celebrities. Science fiction conventions traditionally partake of the nature of both professional conventions and fan conventions, with the balance varying from one to another. Conventions also exist for various hobbies, such as gaming or model railroads.

Business tourism or business travel is a more limited and focused subset of regular tourism. During business tourism (traveling), individuals are still working and being paid, but are doing so away from both their workplace and home.

Green conventions or green meetings are conventions which are conducted in ways which minimize the environmental burdens imposed by such activities. Green event planners apply environmentally preferred practices to waste management, resource and energy use, travel and local transportation, facilities selection, siting and construction, food provision and disposal, hotels and accommodations, and management and purchasing decisions. The practice is known as "event greening" or "sustainable event management".

A destination marketing organization (DMO) is an organisation which promotes a location as an attractive travel destination. DMOs are known as tourist boards, tourism authorities or "Convention and Visitors Bureaux". They primarily exist to provide information to leisure travellers. Additionally, where a suitable infrastructure exists, they encourage event organisers to choose their location for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions, collectively abbreviated as MICE.

According to Robert's Rules of Order, a widely used guide to parliamentary procedure, a meeting is a gathering of a group of people to make decisions. This sense of "meeting" may be different from the general sense in that a meeting in general may not necessarily be conducted for the purpose of making decisions.

Thessaloniki Convention & Visitors Bureau—known as TCVB —was the first such bureau that operated in Greece. It was founded by the Thessaloniki Hotel Association (THA) in 2000, operated as a non‑profit organization and was active until 2009. The main goal of TCVB was to establish the city of Thessaloniki as an internationally recognized conference city and a popular destination for incentive travel.

Khonkaen International Convention and Exhibition Center (KICE) is a convention center and exhibition hall in Khon Kaen, Thailand. It was built by CP Land, with an investment of almost 2 billion baht. The center is expected to help raise Khon Kaen's profile as a MICE destination, a move promoted by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau.

The International Association of Speakers Bureaus (IASB) is a 501c6 nonprofit trade membership organization of speakers bureaus, lecture agencies and speaker management companies located around the world. Founded in 1986, IASB provides leadership to the bureau industry through education, resources and partnerships with organizations that support the meetings and events industry.
