George Mondo Kagonyera, also Mondo Kagonyera, is a Ugandan veterinarian, politician, academic, and university administrator. He is the immediate past chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest and largest university in Uganda. He was appointed to that position in 2007 by President Yoweri Museveni. [1] After serving a full four year-term, he was re-appointed for another term in 2011, [2] [3] and was re-installed in January 2012. [4]

Background and education

Kagonyer was born in Kabuga Village, Rukungiri District, in the Western Region of Uganda, circa 1941, to Zakaria Kagonyera and Elizabeth Kirihura. He attended Kigezi College Butobere for his O-Level studies, before he was admitted to Royal College Nairobi for his A-Level education. He studied at the University of Nairobi, graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in the early 1960s. Later, he went on to obtain a Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine, from the University of California Davis, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from the same institution. [2] [3] [5]

Work experience

In 1967, he worked as a District Veterinary Officer for Masaka district for about five months which job he dropped to go for further studies. In 1971, following graduation from the University of California with his Master of Science degree, Kagonyera joined Makerere University as a lecturer. He was instrumental in establishing the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which has since morphed into the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & BioSecurity. He also served as the chairman of the university appointments board from 1993 until 1999. He left the university to join Ugandan politics in 1998. As a politician, he served as the member of Parliament for Rubabo constituency in Rukungiri District and as a minister for general duties in the office of the prime minister. [2] [3] He also served as the deputy managing director of the Ugandan National Social Security Fund from 2006 until 2008. [6]

John Pancras Mukasa Lubowa Ssebuwufu, commonly known as John Ssebuwufu is a Ugandan chemist, academic and administrator. He is a former chancellor of Kyambogo University, Uganda's second-largest public university serving between 2014-2022 having served for 2 terms. He was installed as chancellor on 19 February 2014, replacing Eric Tiyo Adriko, who had completed his two term tenure. The correct spelling of his last name is Ssebuwufu. However the literature contains many instances where the name is spelled with a single "s".

Edward Bitanywaine Rugumayo is a Ugandan politician, diplomat, author, academic and environmentalist. He has previously served as cabinet minister in three Ugandan administrations. From 1979 until 1980, Rugumayo served as the Chairman of the Uganda Consultative Council. He currently serves as the chancellor of two Ugandan universities. He is a botanist and a community leader.

John Musisi Senyonyi is a Ugandan mathematician, academic, evangelist and academic administrator. He is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University, a private university that was accredited by the Uganda National Council of Higher Education (UNCHE), in 1997. He was appointed to that position in 2010. Following ten continuous years in that position, he retired, and handed over to Aaron Mushengyezi, in August 2020.

Martin Jerome Okec Aliker was a Ugandan dental surgeon, businessman, and community leader. He was a senior adviser to the President of Uganda and sat on the board of directors of nearly forty Ugandan companies. He was the chancellor of Victoria University Uganda, a private institution. From 2004 until 2014, he served as the founding chancellor of Gulu University, a public university.

Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanja is a Ugandan veterinarian, academic, and academic administrator. He has been the chancellor of Gulu University, a public institution of higher education, since October 2014, replacing Martin Aliker. He is a former vice chancellor of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He assumed that position in 1989 and stepped down in October 2014.
