Julius Nyerere International Airport( IATA : DAR, ICAO : HTDA) is the international airport of Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. It is located in Kipawa ward of Ilala District in Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. The airport has flights to destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. It is named after Julius Nyerere, the nation's first president. [5]
In October 2005, "Dar es Salaam International Airport" (DIA) was renamed "Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport" and on 1 November 2006, "Julius Nyerere International Airport". [6] A total of 9,501,265 passengers used the airport from 1980 to 2004, averaging 2,770 passengers per day. [7]
In April 2013, the Tanzania Airports Authority signed a TSH 275 billion contract with BAM International of the Netherlands for the construction of the first phase of Terminal III, with a capacity of 3.5 million passengers per year. [8] In November 2015, the second phase was also awarded to BAM, at a contract price of US$110 million, and will add capacity for an additional 2.5 million passengers per year. [9] After completion of Terminal III, it is expected that Terminal II will be devoted solely to domestic passengers. [9] It is proposed to build a rail shuttle link from the airport to the city and rail coaches have already been bought for this (2014). [10]
The new Terminal 3 was constructed using domestic funding, and started operations in August 2019. [11] [12] In October 2022, it was announced that Terminal 2 is all set to be renovated soon by the Government of Tanzania. [13] [14] In February 2022, Tanzania Airports Authority announced their plans of developing a four-star hotel and commercial complex at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). [15]
There are three terminals at Dar es Salaam airport.
Terminal 1 is a small terminal that handles chartered and private flights. It has an annual capacity of handling 500,000 passengers.[ citation needed ] This small terminal's operations as an International Airport ceased in 1984 after completion of Terminal II.
Terminal 2 is used for domestic and regional scheduled flights. It has a capacity of handling 1.5 million passengers. [16] As of March 31st, 2023, The terminal is set to close in June this year temporarily for 2 years to make ways for renovation. [17]
Terminal 3 is the newest terminal that opened in August 2019. It is used for International flights. The terminal consists of two phases, Phase I and II. There are 58 businesses in the terminal categorized under retails, operational machines and provision of services. [18]

1 : KLM's inbound flights from Amsterdam to Dar es Salaam make a stop in Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar. However, the airline does not have traffic rights to transport passengers solely between Kilimanjaro/Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania. It is also the capital of the Dar es Salaam Region. With a population of over five million people, Dar es Salaam is the largest city in East Africa and the sixth-largest in Africa. Located on the Swahili coast, Dar es Salaam is an important economic center and one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
Transport in Tanzania includes road, rail, air and maritime networks. The road network is 86,472 kilometres (53,731 mi) long, of which 12,786 kilometres (7,945 mi) is classified as trunk road and 21,105 kilometres (13,114 mi) as regional road. The rail network consists of 3,682 kilometres (2,288 mi) of track. Commuter rail service is in Dar es Salaam only. There are 28 airports, with Julius Nyerere International being the largest and the busiest. Ferries connect Mainland Tanzania with the islands of Zanzibar. Several other ferries are active on the countries' rivers and lakes.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) (IATA: JRO, ICAO: HTKJ) is an international airport located in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. The airport serves the cities of Arusha and Moshi. The airport handled 802,731 passengers in 2014 and mainly serves regional flights as well as a few long-haul services due to its importance as a leisure destination. It is the largest airport in northern Tanzania, by size and passenger volume.
Precision Air Services Plc is a Tanzanian airline based at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. The airline operates scheduled passenger services to Nairobi and Comoros; and to various airports and airstrips in Tanzania. Kenya Airways owns 41.23% of the airline.
Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) (Swahili: Kampuni ya Ndege ya Tanzania) is the flag carrier airline of Tanzania. It is based in Dar es Salaam, with its hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport.

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) is the government body that regulates air services and airport services, and provides air navigation services, in Tanzania. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 2003 and operates under the purview of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development. The TCAA is responsible for the disposition of aviation safety and for the licensing of aviation personnel. It is also responsible for contributing to the financial oversight of Tanzania's air infrastructure development; the registration of aircraft; for the investigation of air accidents; for local area search and rescue; and in conjunction with the Tanzania Airports Authority, for the operation of airports and aerodromes.
Zambezi Airlines was a privately owned airline headquartered in Lusaka, Zambia, that operated flights to south and western Africa out of its base at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.
The 2011 Dar es Salaam explosions were a series of store ammunition explosions at an ammunition depot in Gongolamboto ward of Ilala District of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, that killed 20–32 people. According to officials at the base, the first explosion was at 8:30 pm local time. Being the second explosion in two years of an ammunition depot near a populated area, several groups questioned the locations of these centers and requested they be moved. Reports indicate that 23 military structures, two homes and a school were destroyed.
Flightlink Limited, formerly Flightlink Air Charters (Tanzania) Limited, is an airline based in the city of Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. The airline offers scheduled flight services to the primary tourism and business centres across the country. In addition, it offers Air Charter and Medevac services on demand.
Auric Air Services Limited is a small privately owned airline based in Tanzania, Operating from Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) Dar-es-salaam, Arusha Airport and Mwanza Airport. The Company offers scheduled flights to 42 destinations within East Africa as well as on demand private non-scheduled air charter.
Fastjet Airlines Limited (Tanzania), also known as Fastjet Tanzania, was a low-cost airline that operated flights under the fastjet brand in Tanzania. The airline was founded in 2011 as Fly540 Tanzania, but through the acquisition of Fly540 in 2012, it was rebranded as Fastjet Tanzania. It was based in Dar es Salaam. The airline carried more than 350,000 passengers in its first year of operations and sold one million seats by December 2014. It went into liquidation on 25 November 2019.
Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit also known as UDART is a bus rapid transit system that began operations on 10 May 2016 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Ngerengere Air Force Base is a military airbase of the Tanzania Air Force Command. It is located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) west of Dar es Salaam, in Ngerengere ward, Morogoro District of Morogoro Region in Tanzania.

Swissport Tanzania is an aviation service provider in Tanzania. The company entered the Tanzanian market in 2001 after the acquisition of Dar es Salaam Airports Handling Company (DAHACO) by the parent company Swissport International. The company currently operates Ground handling, Cargo Handling, Aircraft maintenance and Fueling services at Julius Nyerere International Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport. The company has also recently expanded its footprint due to the current growth saturation at the major airports into Songwe Airport and Mtwara Airport. The company is a public company and was listed on the Dar Stock Exchange in 2003.
Tanzania–United Kingdom relations are bilateral relations between Tanzania and the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has historically been a partner of Tanzania in many areas, particularly trade and security.
Precision Air Flight 494 (PW494) was a scheduled domestic passenger flight within Tanzania, from Julius Nyerere International Airport to Bukoba Airport via Mwanza Airport. On 6 November 2022, the ATR 42–500 plane crashed in Lake Victoria while attempting to land at Bukoba during bad weather and low visibility. Nineteen people were killed, including both pilots who drowned before rescue workers could reach them.
