Hat Films is an English comedy and gaming YouTube channel comprising Ross Hornby, Alex Smith and Chris Trott. Since 2014, they have been part of The Yogscast network. [5]

Contents

Whilst much of their early success came from the creation of several official Minecraft trailers, [6] their gaming and vlog content makes up the majority of their channel, including games such as Grand Theft Auto , Minecraft and Rust. They are also film-makers and musicians, with their videos often including impromptu a cappella singing. [7] [8] They are also known for their music releases, such as their 2015 charity album Population: You, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. [9]

They are the creators of the YouTube comedy series Stunt Lads, [10] and were featured in the book Yogscast: The Diggy Diggy Book. [11]

Stunt Lads

Stunt Lads is a machinima series created in Grand Theft Auto V . While covering the work of Hat Films, Vice reported in April 2016 that Stunt Lads was created by Hat Films "entirely in the Rockstar Editor," a digital media editing software. The report further mentioned that the idea of Stunt Lads "came from a collective interest in light-hearted, slapstick fare and an inability to perform stunts to the same standard as some of the online scene's dedicated crews." [10] Playground.ru, the Russian gaming information site, featured a review of Hat Films and their work on Stunt Lads in July 2015. [12]

Minecraft trailers

Hat Films have worked with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, among others, on the official Minecraft update trailers for console and PC editions of the game. [13] [14] They have also worked on the official opening videos for Minecon. [15] Hat Films first came into contact with Mojang in the early stages of their career, while the group was asking for permission to record Let's Play content of the game. [16]

Music

Hat Films are also known for their music releases. They have independently released music alongside videos, and later released music through the Yogscast. Their independent releases include instrumentals they produced for Minecraft trailers, music from their Filfy' Animals series, and other releases. [17]

More recently, they participate in the annual Yogscast Jingle Jam charity livestream event, where they produce and release a charity album. Their debut, Population: You, reached #5 on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart in 2015. [9] Follow-ups to this album include Destination Drumpf in 2016, Neon Musk in 2017, and Secret Santa in 2018. In addition to this, a single from Destination Drumpf was released in 2017; a studio remaster of "Shipping and Receiving". [18]

Hat Films have also released three albums containing their fans' remixes of songs from the charity albums; Population: US (2015), [19] Destination Drumpf – The Remixes (2016), [20] Neon Musk – Remix Collection (2017) [21] and Secret Santa – The Remixes (2018) [22]

As a band Hat Films have performed under the name Pleasureville, or more recently Mr Sam & The Dednutz, along with their editor Craig Frost, Yogscast audio engineer Sam Gibbs and artist Rhiannon Gower.

Additional Channels

Hat Films also upload YouTube videos on additional channels, Hat Gaming and The Hat Chat Podcast which both host content from livestreams and podcasts respectively. [23]

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang is a 2012 documentary film directed by Paul Owens. It is about the history of the company Mojang and its creation, Minecraft. The film features interviews with company personnel such as Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten and insights from people involved in the gaming industry and from players profoundly impacted by the game. The film was produced by 2 Player Productions. The production was funded through a Kickstarter campaign and spanned nearly two years in locations across North America and Europe.

Minecon is an annual interactive livestream and fan convention about the video game Minecraft, hosted by Mojang. The first gathering in 2010 was known as MinecraftCon. The event then went by the Minecon name from 2011 to 2019. The Minecon 2011 convention was held in Las Vegas and celebrated the launch of the game with Minecraft-related discussion panels and gaming areas. The most recent in-person convention, Minecon 2016, held in Anaheim, had 12,000 attendees. An attempt at returning to in-person events was prevented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

<i>Minecraft: Story Mode</i> 2015 video game

Minecraft: Story Mode is an episodic point-and-click video game developed and published by Telltale Games, based on Mojang Studios' sandbox video game Minecraft. A Minecraft mod is a mod that changes aspects of the sandbox game Minecraft. Minecraft mods can add additional content to the game, make tweaks to specific features, and optimize performance. Crown and Council is a turn-based strategy game developed by Mojang employee Henrik Pettersson. The game was both announced and released as a surprise on Steam on April 22, 2016 and was made available for free.

<i>Minecraft Earth</i> 2019 video game

Minecraft Earth was an augmented reality and geolocation-based sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios and Blackbird interactive and published by Xbox Game Studios. A spin-off of the video game Minecraft, it was first announced in May 2019, and was available on Android and iOS. The game was free-to-play, and was first released in early access on 17 October 2019. The game received its final update in January 2021 and officially shut down on 30 June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Minecraft server is a player-owned or business-owned multiplayer game server for the 2011 Mojang Studios video game Minecraft. In this context, the term "server" often colloquially refers to a network of connected servers, rather than a single machine. Players can start their own server either by setting one up on a computer using software provided by Mojang, or by using a hosting provider so they can have their server run on dedicated machines with guaranteed uptime. The largest server is widely accepted to be the minigame server Hypixel.

Minecraft is a media franchise developed from and centered around the video game of the same name. Primarily developed by Mojang Studios, the franchise consists of five video games, along with various books, merchandise, events, and an upcoming theatrical film. Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios in 2014, alongside the Minecraft franchise and its editions.

Daniel Condren, better known as RTGame, is an Irish-Canadian YouTuber and live streamer. He is known for his humorous commentary during gameplay, and often plays games in unorthodox or mischievous ways. He began making videos in 2011, began streaming in 2016, and experienced a surge in popularity in 2018. As of 15 August 2023, his YouTube channel has over 2.8 million subscribers, while his Twitch channel has over 1.1 million followers.
