Haven Shepherd (born March 9, 2003) is a Vietnamese-American Paralympic swimmer. [1] [2] In 2018, she was included on the BBC 100 Women list. [3]
Shepherd was born Do Thi Thuy Phuong in Quang Nam province, Vietnam after her parents had an affair. [4] [5] [2] When she was 14 months old, her parents died in a bomb explosion, either as a double suicide or as a murder-suicide perpetuated by her father. [4] [5] Although Shepherd was also intended to die in the explosion, she was instead blown 40 feet away and only sustained damage to her legs. [6] [7] An older half-sister also survived the explosion. [4] [5] Shepherd was brought by her grandmother to a hospital in Da Nang, where both her legs were amputated. [4] [5] At age 20 months, she was adopted by an American couple from Carthage, Missouri, who had six older children. [5] [6]
Shepherd learned to swim by age 3. [6] She was homeschooled. [1]
Shepherd began swimming competitively at age 10. [6] By the time she was 13, the US Paralympic team began tracking her as a potential candidate based on her times. [5]
She came in second in her event at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru. [8]
At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, Shepherd came fifth in the Women's 200m Individual Medley SM8. [7] [6]
Shepherd won a gold medal at the 2023 Parapan American Games in the women's 200m individual medley SM8. Prior to her win, she came fourth in the backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke 100m events, and seventh in the 50m freestyle. [8] [9]
In April 2024, Shepherd participated in an ad campaign for Reese's. [10] Shepherd is set to compete at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris. [11]

Medley swimming is a combination of four different swimming strokes into one race. This race is either swum by one swimmer as individual medley (IM) or by four swimmers as a medley relay.

Dame Sarah Joanne Storey, is a British cyclist and swimmer, a multiple gold medallist in the Paralympic Games, and six times British (able-bodied) national track champion.
Oliver William Hynd MBE, known as Ollie, is a British swimmer. He competed in the Paralympics as a class 8 swimmer, having neuromuscular myopathy and associated limb deformities. In 2018, following reclassification protocols, Hynd moved into the S9 class, but remained in SB8 for breaststroke.
Stephanie Millward is a British former Paralympic swimmer.
Charlotte Sarah Henshaw is a British Paralympic full-time athlete across multiple disciplines. Originally a swimmer, she changed to canoeing from 2017, becoming the reigning World champion in the KL2 (five-time) and VL3 (three-time) 200m events. In September 2021, at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, she became a Paralympic champion at her fourth games, winning the Women's KL2 event.

Tully Alicia Jacqueline Kearney is a British Paralympic swimmer. Kearney currently competes in the S5/SB4/SM5 classification for swimmers with physical disabilities. She won gold and silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and followed this up at the Paris 2024 Games with two further gold medals, including retaining her 100 m freestyle S5 title. Since first competing at the World Para Swimming Championships in 2013 she has won thirteen World Championship medals, ten of which are gold. Kearney is a multiple British, European and World record holder.

She has won bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Para Swimming Championships, and won silver at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships. She has represented Canada at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics, and will compete in swimming at the 2024 Paralympic Games.
Colleen Young is an American swimmer. She is a three-time Paralympian earning a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games, as well as a bronze and a silver medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games. She has also earned multiple gold, silver and bronze medals at World Championships. She competes in the Paralympic class S13. In 2016 she set a Pan-American record in the 100m breaststroke.
