Hawking is a progressive metal band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, composed of vocalists and guitarists Tom Vanderkam and Saul Sitar, bassist Chris Young, and drummer Noel Dufour.

Musical style

The band's music is most broadly categorized as Progressive Metal. However, notable Melodic Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, Symphonic Metal and Alternative Rock influences are present in their work. [1] [2] The band’s earlier work was often described as Math rock or "Math-Pop", alluding to their use of interlocking guitar riffs and highly syncopated rhythms. [3]

History

Inception and The Crash (2013)

Hawking embarked on their first tour of Western Canada in August 2013. [4]

On August 26, 2013, the band was involved in a single vehicle accident as they were headed home from the final show of their Western Canadian tour, leaving all members of the band with injuries. [5] Two of the group members, drummer Chartwell Kerr and bassist Paul Engels, were both airlifted to hospital in critical condition. Kerr sustained extensive damage to his legs. Engels suffered a severe head injury, and was in a coma for five weeks after the accident. He was unable to continue with the band. Chris Young replaced Engels on bass in February 2014.

Post-Crash (2014)

During the summer months of 2014, the band completed a 50-date tour covering the Western USA and most of mainland Canada. [6]

Present (2015-present)

Hawking released their debut self-titled EP independently on July 14, 2015. [7] [8] Reviews were largely positive. [1] [3] [8] [9] [10] [11] The band completed a 43-date North American tour in the months immediately following the release, and became known for their live shows and relentless touring schedule. [12]

On August 26, 2016, the band released their single "Comfortable", completing a Canadian tour in support.

Hawking released their full-length album "Diverge" on April 7, 2017, completing a North American tour in support. In Fall 2017, they completed a Western Canadian tour with Ninjaspy and The Body Politic.

In Fall 2018, Hawking completed a Western Canadian tour with Youth Fountain. [13]

In Spring 2019, Hawking completed a Western Canadian tour. In Fall 2019, the band completed a 28-date North American tour supporting Stellar Circuits.

On January 31, 2020, Hawking released their single “Never Bow”.

On March 20, 2020, Hawking released their single “Elucidate, Articulate”.

On March 18, 2022, Hawking released their single “A Tragedy (This Melody)”.

Noel Dufour replaced Chartwell Kerr on drums in 2023.

Hawking appears in the film Midnight Sun (2016). Frontman Tom Vanderkam appears in the film Deadpool (2016). Vanderkam and former lead guitarist Ben Klassen appeared in the film If I Stay (2014). Vanderkam also owned and operated an independent booking agency, Badmouth Booking, until 2017. [14]

Mew is a Danish alternative rock band made up of Jonas Bjerre, Johan Wohlert (bass) and Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen (drums). Wohlert left the band in 2006 before the birth of his first child, but made a return in 2013 while the band were in the studio, before making his first live appearances since his departure in 2014. Guitarist Bo Madsen left the band in June 2015. This was confirmed in a statement on the band's official website on 1 July of the same year.

Nomeansno was a Canadian punk rock band formed in Victoria, British Columbia and later relocated to Vancouver. They released 11 albums, including a collaborative album with Jello Biafra, and numerous EPs and singles. Critic Martin Popoff described their music as "the mightiest merger between the hateful aggression of punk and the discipline of heavy metal." Nomeansno's distinct hardcore punk sound, complex instrumentation, and dark, "savagely intelligent" lyrics inspired subsequent musicians. They were a formative influence on punk jazz, post-hardcore, math rock, and emo.

The Hanson Brothers were a Canadian punk rock band formed in 1984 in Victoria and later based in Vancouver. The group included John and Rob Wright and Tom Holliston, all members of the punk rock band Nomeansno. The Hanson Brothers' band name references characters in the cult ice hockey film Slap Shot.

"Champagne Supernova" is a song by English rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It is the closing track on the band's second studio album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995), and was released as the sixth and final single from the album in Australia and New Zealand on 13 May 1996 by Helter Skelter. Paul Weller appears as a guest guitarist and backing vocalist on the track. A music video for the song, directed by Nigel Dick, was released in 1996. The single was not released in the UK.

Hotel Mira is a Canadian alternative rock band formed in Vancouver in 2010. It consists of Charlie Kerr on vocals, Mike Noble on bass, Clark Grieve on guitar and keyboards, and Cole George on drums.
