Hawnay Troof is an American electronic indie band formed in late 2001. [1]

Despite the band's American punk and electronic background, many elements of pop, dance-punk, electronica, soul, noise music and club. have been incorporated into its sound. [2]

History

Origins

The band began when Vice Cooler and friend posed as a band and performed a guerilla-style set during a show. [3] Despite having played only a handful of shows, he was invited to play similar guerilla-style sets opening for the likes of Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Coachwhips, Glass Candy, Lightning Bolt, Bratmobile, Gravy Train!!!!, and Stereo Total. [4]

Eventually Cooler relocated to Oakland, California and continued to perform. [5] He became friends with Drew Daniel (of Soft Pink Truth and Matmos), Allison Wolfe, and Jenny Hoyston; all of whom would appear later on future live performances and/ or recordings. [6] He signed to Retard Disco who released the 2003 debut Get Up: Resolution Love!. The band toured first shows in Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe [7] with The Gossip. The "Man On My Back" single was released during the gour, surprising everyone with a harsher, more evolved sound. The band performed in their underwear. The absence of clothing was meant "be this liberating thing for people to see." [5]

Dollar and Deed and Community

Cooler recorded from January to March 2005. Jenny Hoyston was a collaborator. Others who worked on the record were Stereo Total, Barr, and Kori Gardner of Mates Of State [8] and John Dieterich. [9]

Dollar and Deed was released in April 2006. The EP Community followed.

After the 20-month "Dollar and Deed" tour, Hawnay Troof played shows in Egypt, China, and Europe. [1]

Islands Of Ayle

Islands Of Ayle was finished between December 2007 and March 2008. Three of the album's songs, "Front My Hope", "Venus Venus Piper", and "Water" were collaborations between Vice and Bretzel Goring of Stereo Total through email. [10] Many other tracks were created with collaborators via email.

Cooler has said that the goal for Islands Of Ayle was to create a pop record, but that it ended up accidentally "damaged". [11]

The album was mixed Vice Cooler and Greg Saunier and was released on September 9, 2008. [12] The first edition of the CD came with an extra disc of remixes and a limited edition o-card cover. [13]

The album's release came with a world tour opening for Deerhoof, [14] [15] High Places, [16] Telepathe [17] and Matt And Kim, [18] which had the band spanning the same area as the previous 20-month tour over the last four months of 2008.

October marked the release of his free, fan remixed record Remix Projection and also brought Hawnay Troof on its second tour of Australia and New Zealand. [19] This time it was a tour with Peaches and later as a part of Australia's largest traveling electronic festival Parklife. During this time, Peaches started performing randomly with Hawnay Troof as a guest back up singer into December 2008. [20] Shortly after the band surprised the crowd at Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest [21] with a very memorable set, which including Vice making use of the outside stage by incorporating the ceiling and trees by climbing them throughout his set, and jumping off, working the crowd into a frenzy. Unlike Dollar And Deed, Islands of Ayle was released to great acclaim. Pitchfork rated it with a 7.5 and described Vice as "[leaving] an impression of a confidence that has moved beyond the ego and into a territory that enables him to get away with just about anything" [24] while Spin Magazine said that the album is "...a bewilderingly awesome musical gumbo. Both confrontational and congregational, Troof's beat-driven, stutter-filled jams will move your feet the way they were meant to move – with wild abandon and reckless intent." [25] Mae Shi and High Places named it as one of the best albums of 2008 [26] while electronic heavyweights Ladytron called it one of their top ten records of the year in Filter Magazine. [27]

Apple O' is the fifth studio album by the indie rock band Deerhoof. It was released in 2003 on Kill Rock Stars and 5 Rue Christine, an offshoot of Kill Rock Stars. The album is the group's first with guitarist Chris Cohen.

XBXRX is an American rock band formed in 1998 in Mobile, Alabama, United States. Their early sound was no wave-influenced, but became more improvised and deconstructed, moving away from using the synthesizers that typify new wave. They are a collective with a revolving cast of musicians, including Steve Touchstone, Weasel Walter, and Vice Cooler. In 2002, Wesley Willis wrote a song dedicated to the band. For many years the collective resided in Oakland, California, where they finished working on their last full-length record, Wars, which was released in April 2007. In 2008 they were working on a record of improv based pieces titled "Sound" and splits with Mika Miko and Japanther. As of 2010, they have regrouped, and relocated to Los Angeles releasing new music and playing shows around California with their new line up.

<i>Dollar and Deed</i> 2006 studio album by Hawnay Troof

Dollar and Deed is the second full-length studio album by Vice Cooler's California based solo project, Hawnay Troof. The double album was written and recorded during the Get Up! Resolution: Love worldwide tour in 2004 and 2005, and was later finished up at Cooler's home studio in Oakland. It was released through Retard Disco and Southern Records on May 16, 2006 in both CD and vinyl LP format, the latter including a deluxe 8-page photobook featuring over 200 photographs taken by Cooler during the world tour.

<i>Offend Maggie</i> 2008 studio album by Deerhoof

Offend Maggie is the ninth studio album by Deerhoof, released October 7, 2008 on Kill Rock Stars. Over the summer the band put up sheet music for the song "Fresh Born" online, and invited fans to record their own version. The title track is streaming on the label's website, while Wired is streaming short clips of various songs on the album.

Mika Miko was an American band formed in 2003 in Los Angeles, California. In 2004, they gained local popularity for their frenetic live performances. Featuring Victor Fandgore, Jet Blanca, Michelle Suarez, Jessica Clavin, and Jon Erik Edrosa, the original line up of the band made its first demo CD-R, its first 7" record, and toured the West Coast extensively before replacing their original drummer with Kate Hall and embarking on their first national tour in the summer of 2005. Also in 2005, they were featured on two compilations released by Los Angeles-based record labels, produced their first two self-released cassettes, and two members of the band appeared on the Hawnay Troof EP, Community.

"Let's Kill Tonight" is a song by the American rock band Panic! at the Disco, released on August 29, 2011, as the third and final single from their third studio album, Vices & Virtues (2011). The band released a tour video on August 23, 2011. The song was first revealed along with three other songs from the album on February 1, 2011, when the band performed at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan. The studio version made its debut in the band's short film The Overture, released 9 days before the album.

Javelin is a production duo based in Brooklyn, New York City. Cousins George Langford and Tom Van Buskirk started making music together in Providence, RI in 2005, although their earliest tape experiments date back to childhood. Each member is a multi-instrumentalist. George plays the guitar, bass guitar, drums, and mandolin, while Tom plays the cello and piano. The duo has been described as "obsessed with old school hip-hop of an ‘80s vintage". While creating mostly mellow electro-pop/80s-synth style music, the band's music is very eclectic and they have even produced a country music album.
