Haydee Ong is a Filipino basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of the UST Growling Tigresses women's basketball team. She was the head coach of the Philippines women's national basketball team from 2008 to 2014. In October 2024, she was named the inaugural commissioner for the upcoming Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL).

Early life and education

Ong was inspired to play basketball from his father who was a varsity player while her mother initially opposed to the idea of her doing something that is considered as a "men's sport". Haydee Ong later attended the University of Santo Tomas for her collegiate studies under an athletic scholarship. After graduating, she worked as a pharmacist for two years before getting involved in basketball again. [2]

Competitive career

As a player for the University of Santo Tomas from 1987 to 1990, Haydee Ong helped her college win four straight championships at the UAAP. Ong also played for the Philippine women's national team from 1986 to 1993. [1]

Coaching career

National team

Ong joined the coaching staff of the Philippine women's national team in 1996 [1] and was appointed as head coach of the national team in 2008, replacing Fritz Gatson. [3] The national team under her mentorship also participated in the defunct Women's Philippine Basketball League. [4]

The national team won its first gold medal in a regional tournament at the 2010 SEABA Championship for Women under Ong's watch. The national team also won silver at the 2011 [5] and 2013 Southeast Asian Games.

Her national team coaching stint ended in 2014. [2] Patrick Aquino succeeded her as coach of the national team in 2015. [6]

Collegiate

Ong has coached the Ateneo Lady Eagles of the UAAP for seven years. [1]

She coaches the women's varsity team of Enderun Colleges. [2] She led Enderun on their first National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) stint in 2016 where they managed to become champions by beating Rizal Technological University in their final game. Ong was also named as Coach of the Year for the 2016 season. [7]

In 2016, Ong began coaching the women's team of her alma mater, the University of Santo Tomas at UAAP Season 79. [8]

The UST Tigresses under Ong ended the NU Lady Bulldogs's championship streak in 2023, in the finals of Season 86 [9] [10]

Sports management

She is the athletic director of Immaculate Conception Academy High School in Greenhills. [2] In October 2023, Ong was reportedly named as the first commissioner of the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) which is set to hold its first season in 2025. [11] [12]

The season started with an Olympic-style opening ceremony on July 9, 2011 and followed by a doubleheader basketball games on July 10 at the Araneta Coliseum.

UAAP Season 75 was the 2012–2013 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. The season's theme was "Unbreakable at 75" in relation to the league's diamond year. It was hosted by National University.

UAAP Season 79 is the 2016–2017 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). This season, hosted by the University of Santo Tomas officially opened on September 3, 2016. The opening ceremony was held at the UST Plaza Mayor at 3:00 pm with the formal introduction of ballroom dancing as a demonstration sport in this season by the host school University of Santo Tomas (UST) at España, Manila. The official ceremony started at 5:00 pm as there was a concert party themed "Dare to Dream" where the official theme song for the season was revealed. However, unlike in the previous years when the first double-header basketball games were held following the opening ceremonies, this year it was held the following day, September 4 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The UAAP Season 78 basketball tournaments are held in school year 2015-16. University of the Philippines Diliman is the season host. The basketball tournaments started with a doubleheader basketball games after the opening ceremonies on September 5, 2015, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and ended on December 2, 2015, at the Mall of Asia Arena, while the junior's basketball has currently been held since November. ABS-CBN's UHF channel ABS-CBN Sports and Action broadcast the men's tournament for the sixteenth consecutive year.

Ennajie Cruz Laure, better known as EJ Laure, is a Filipino volleyball player. She is a member and a former team captain of the UST Golden Tigresses volleyball team, and a former Philippine national team member.

Patrick Henry Aquino is a Filipino basketball coach who serves as the head coach of the Philippines women's national basketball team, he has been appointed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas since December 2014 when the team have a new corporate backer Ever Bilena, replacing long-time mentor Haydee Ong. This is the second time that Aquino has coached a national team, Aquino was once manned coaching duties for the Philippines women's national under-19 basketball team. Among his coaching achievements for promoted into Level 1 of 2017 FIBA Asia Women's Championship.
