Patrick Henry Aquino (born May 30, 1971)^[1] is a Filipino basketball coach who serves as the head coach of the Philippines women's national basketball team, he has been appointed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas since December 2014 when the team have a new corporate backer Ever Bilena, replacing long-time mentor Haydee Ong.^[2]^[3] This is the second time that Aquino has coached a national team, Aquino was once manned coaching duties for the Philippines women's national under-19 basketball team. Among his coaching achievements for promoted into Level 1 of 2017 FIBA Asia Women's Championship.^[4]

Playing career

Aquino spent his collegiate basketball career for the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP from 1988 to 1993^[5] under coach Rey Madrid and also played for the Blu Detergent team in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).^[2]

Coaching career

Aside from his playing stint with Ever Bilena on the men's side, Aquino also coached the Ever Bilena women's team^[6] that bring home the grand slam victories in the now-defunct Women's Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) in 1998 and 1999.^[5]

He has also coached the NU Lady Bulldogs in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) from 2012 to 2022. The team won six straight titles under his mentorship.^[7]^[8]

Aquino then became the head coach of the Philippines women's national basketball team, appointed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas ^[2]^[3] This is the second time that Aquino has coached a national team, Aquino was once manned coaching duties for the Philippines women's national under-19 basketball team. Among his coaching achievements for promoted into Level 1 of 2017 FIBA Asia Women's Championship.^[4]

The Manny V. Pangilinan Cup, also known as the MVP Cup, is an international basketball tournament in the Philippines organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. An earlier version of the cup, dubbed the MVP Cup Invitational Championships, was conceived in 2010 to prepare the Philippine national basketball team for FIBA-related competitions by having them compete against other national teams or top-level professional clubs.

Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) is an amateur basketball tournament participated by different high school basketball teams from the NCAA, UAAP and Filipino-Chinese leagues. PSSBC's mission is to provide an avenue for young basketball players to further hone their skills before they will advanced in the collegiate level. The PSSBC was founded in December 2012, by the Fil-Chinese owners of different brands, sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and supported by Ever Bilena/Blackwater Elite, Rain or Shine, Freego, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, MEC Networks, Hapee Toothpaste, Dickies Underwear, and Ironcon Builders.

The Philippines participated at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from 18 August to 2 September 2018. The country won 21 medals to finish 19th overall in the medal tally of the games; an improvement from 22nd place placement of the country in the previous 2014 edition. However this came short of the 15th place target set by officials who deemed the actual placement as acceptable. Two of the Philippines' gold medal came from golf, while the other two came from weightlifting and skateboarding.

The women's national 3x3 team of the Philippines represents the country in international 3x3 basketball matches and is controlled by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

The NU Lady Bulldogs are the collegiate women's basketball team of the National University (NU), which play in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the premiere sports league in the country.
