Hayley Sales is an American-Canadian singer-songwriter and actress. [2] [3] [4] Sales' debut album Sunseed was released on June 19, 2007; songs "Keep Drivin" and "What You Want" reached #11 on the Japan Hot 100 and #45 on the Canadian Hot 100, respectively. [5] Her second album, When the Bird Became a Book, was released on June 21, 2010, and includes duets with musicians G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter. [3] [4]
When Sales was growing up, her mother was a dancer and writer, and her father was a musician and sound engineer (Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead and The Ramones), who operated GlassWing Studios out of the upper floor of their Washington D.C home. "I was surrounded by music at all hours of the day. All types of music. I remember the melodies and beats actually rattling the floorboards. My childhood had a soundtrack filled up with everything from R&B and Jazz to Rock and Americana." For many recording sessions, Sales was allowed to sit in and watch the recording process. [2] [3] [4]
The family relocated to Portland, Oregon when Sales was three and within several months, Sales began playing piano and participating in local musical theatre productions. She learned to sing by studying the voices of Judy Garland, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone among others.
By middle school, Sales was accepted into the private performing arts school, The Northwest Academy, [3] where she studied both classical and jazz music, writing, The Meisner Technique, dance and film-making. At the age of 12, she landed the role of Juliet in Concordia University's production of Romeo and Juliet, having lied about her age. In September 2001, she was flown to Washington D.C to perform at the Pentagon for the WWII Ace Pilots Convention. By the time she graduated, two years early at sixteen with honours, Sales had been in over 100 dramatic and musical plays. [2] [3] [4]
Following graduation, her family moved again, this time to an organic blueberry farm on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. [3] Sales began to learn how to use the recording studio from the ground up. Over the summer of 2003, Sales took part in an acting intensive, organized by Canadian casting director Maureen Webb. This workshop led her to sign with her longtime acting manager, Vickie Petronio. Other students included but are not limited to Cory Monteith and Dustin Milligan. Within a half of year of being on the island, Sales landed a lead role in a teen horror film, Sleepover Nightmare, leading to a move to Los Angeles to pursue acting shortly after turning seventeen. [3] The move ended abruptly when a bout of acid reflux, brought on by an eating disorder, caused her to lose her voice. [3] "For over a year, I could barely talk. It was the hardest year of my life. Everything that I had identified with was gone. I was speechless. Literally," she recalls. [2] [3] [4]
During that year, Sales had dedicated her time to songwriting and mastering the recording studio. When her voice finally returned, she immediately put together a band and recorded her first full-length demo album, "First Flight." Upon its completion, Sales began promoting local shows in and around Vancouver Island and Vancouver, British Columbia, drawing two hundred plus people. She then recorded her second full-length demo "Drifter," which drew the attention of the media. In the fall of 2005, Sales performed at a showcase in Vancouver, during which Steve Herman (Live Nation) heard her sing. By December, she was signed by Randy Lennox, to Universal Music Canada. [4]
She began recording her first major label recording, Spring 2006, "Sunseed." Her father, Richard Sales, co-produced the album, which they recorded on her parents' blueberry farm. Sunseed was released in 2007 with singles ‘What You Want’ and ‘Keep Drivin’ landing in the Canadian Top 40 and on the charts in Japan. In 2008, she won Best Mainstream Artist at The Canadian Radio Music Awards. From 2007 to 2009, Sales toured internationally with the likes of Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw, INXS, The Spice Girls, Feist, Justin Nozuka, The Cat Empire, gaining momentum in Australia, Japan, Canada and Europe. [2] When she wasn't touring, Sales lived in Perth, Australia surfing and writing music.
In 2010, Sales began recording her sophomore album, featuring guest appearances by G Love and Donavon Frankenreiter, "When the Bird Became A Book," which was released in 2012. The music video for ‘Just Pretend, directed by Josh Forbes (Sarah Bareilles, The Fray) generating over five million views in three weeks following its release. [5] O'Neill Surf Company sponsored Sales as a musical ambassador. [3]
In 2012, while waiting to begin recording her third album, Sales moved back to Los Angeles to pursue acting, after several years of focusing solely on music. She signed with Paradigm Agency and began studying acting extensively. In 2013, Sales moved up to Vancouver, British Columbia for a recurring role on the TV show, Cedar Cove. [5] Her contract with Universal Music ended during this time and she began raising money through Pledge Music to record her next record. Nearing the completion of her record, Mike Rittberg, former GM at Verve Music Group USA, with whom Sales had been in touch for several years, signed her to his label.[ citation needed ] In October 2015, Sales signed the contract and began completing the record. It is tentatively scheduled for release Spring 2017. The highly anticipated album is co-produced by Richard Sales, horns/strings arranged by Carl Marsh (Stax Volt), recorded at Oceanway Studios in Nashville TN, mixed by Michael Brauer at Electric Lady Studios NYC, and mastered by Joe LaPorta. The masters were delivered in May 2016. [5]

Her most recent appearances include Heartbeat (2016), Generation Wolf (2017), Prodigals (2017), Girlfriends Guide to Divorce (2015), Cedar Cove (2012-2015), and Love On The Sidelines (2015), and Just for the Summer (2020).
She also did voice and motion-capture acting as leading character Rachel S'Jet in the 2016 game Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. [6]

Sales has numerous times cited her admiration for Judy Garland, The Supremes, Ray Charles, and The Beach Boys. [3]
Sales has been a major advocate of oceanic preservation since the beginning of her career. While living in Florida, Sales performed numerous concerts to benefit The Sea Turtle Preservation. Most recently Sales contributed to the Surfrider Foundation by collaborating with O'Neill Surf Company to create a charity T-shirt, all proceeds going towards oceanic preservation. In 2010, the song "Not In His Garden," featuring Donavon Frankenreiter, was featured on David Suzuki's "Playlist For the Planet." [5] Additional charity work includes partaking in a documentary for the W Network (CAN), "Making Waves." The film followed her across the country as she interviewed locals who had started non-profits in their cities/towns. During this experience, Sales wrote and released the song "Lullaby (Change The World)," all proceeds going towards the Canadian-based charity, ChildHaven. While in Los Angeles, Sales is very active with the non-profit, Musicians On Call, a volunteer based program that brings music to children in hospitals. She has also performed several times in Cocoa Beach at the Slater Brothers (Kelly Slater-World Winning Surfer) Invitational, a benefit to raise awareness of skin cancer.

Matthew Frederick Robert Good is a Canadian musician. He was the lead singer and songwriter for the Matthew Good Band, one of the most successful alternative rock bands in Canada during the 1990s and early 2000s. Since the band disbanded in 2002, Good has pursued a solo career and established himself as a political commentator and mental health activist. Between 1996 and 2016, with sales by Matthew Good Band included, Good was the 25th best-selling Canadian artist in Canada. Good has been nominated for 21 Juno Awards during his career, winning four.

James Douglas Vallance is a Canadian songwriter, arranger and producer. He is best known as the songwriting partner of Canadian musician Bryan Adams. Vallance began his professional career as the original drummer and main songwriter for Canadian rock band Prism under the pseudonym "Rodney Higgs." In addition to Adams, Vallance has written songs for many famous international artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Roger Daltrey, Tina Turner, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Europe, Kiss, Scorpions, Anne Murray, and Joe Cocker. The Moonshine Conspiracy is a collective of surfers and artists who share a certain retro sensibility. The Conspiracy was begun in 1998 by Emmett Malloy, his cousins the Malloy brothers ; and former pro-surfer and musician Jack Johnson in Ventura, California. Moonshine released four films. They made a total of six.
Donavon Frankenreiter is an eponymously titled debut album, released in the United States on May 11, 2004. Produced by longtime friend Jack Johnson and regular Johnson collaborator Mario Caldato, Jr, the album sold modestly in the United States, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers and 169 on the Billboard 200. The album performed relatively better in Australia, where Frankenreiter was already well known through regular support gigs with Johnson; also he embarked on an extensive tour of small venues to promote the album. The album reached the top forty of the ARIA albums chart and received gold accreditation in 2005.

Simon Philip Nando Collins is a British-Canadian drummer and the former lead vocalist of the progressive rock band Sound of Contact. Collins is the son of English drummer and singer Phil Collins and Collins' first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. He is the brother of actress Joely Collins and paternal half-brother of actress Lily Collins. Reviewers have compared his vocals to those of his father.
Nine Mile was a Canadian indie rock band, based in Toronto. Founded in 2001, the band's original members were D'Ari Pouyat, Trevor Norris, Joshua Cowan (drums) and Dave Matthews. The founding members only recorded one album together entitled "Run". During the recording of this album, percussionist Dave Tolley was hired as a session musician to play hand percussion. Tolley became a permanent member of the group shortly thereafter. The original line-up performed frequently for two years and embarked on one Canadian national tour before dissolving. Trevor Norris, Josh Cowan, and Dave Matthews all left the band amicably. Shortly thereafter, Tolley moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. Nine Mile's primary singer/songwriter D'Ari Pouyat remained in Toronto. D'Ari and Dave continued working on material, sharing songs and ideas via internet.
Lo Presher is an American rock band formed in 1992 in Brevard County, Florida. The band released three studio albums and toured extensively, including performances on the Vans Warped Tour. The band is usually classified under Surf Rock, but fans are credited with labeling their style as Tribal Alternative, a musical movement popular in the U.S. underground independent scene of the late nineties, of which the band is credited for influencing. They are best known for their work on musical soundtracks for extreme sports videos and for their live, theatrical percussion performances in which they play homemade instruments. The band's name is sometimes credited as Lo Pressure or Low Pressure
