Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics are intended to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal. During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands such as Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar from England, American bands Pentagram, Saint Vitus, the Obsessed, Trouble, and Cirith Ungol, and Swedish band Candlemass defined doom metal as a distinct genre. Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass have been referred to as "the Big Four of Doom Metal".

The band released its first album in 14 years titled Leaves of Yesteryear on May 8, 2020, which marked a return to their earlier gothic progressive metal roots. A new single was composed, arranged, rehearsed and they were went on to record “The World Without a View” during the COVID-19 pandemic, "The World Without a View" was released digitally on December 18, 2020.

Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity led them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was a constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal cords coupled with new musical influences led the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music.

A Crimson Cosmos is the third studio album by the Swedish gothic metal band Lake of Tears. It was released in 1997. Its melodic sound with psychedelic influences reappeared in most of the band's later releases. The song "Lady Rosenred" was released as a single, also in 1997, with "Devil's Diner" and "A Crimson Cosmos" as B-sides. A video for "Devil's Diner" appeared on the Black Mark DVD Metal by Metal, released in 2003.
The Neonai is the fifth studio album by the gothic metal band Lake of Tears. It was released in 2002, being finished off by Daniel Brennare alone, with little help from the other band members. The album was hastily completed to honor the band's contract with Black Mark Production. Practically, the band had been on a temporary hiatus since 2000 and Brennare focused on the songs he thought would be most easily produced and mastered. As a result, unlike earlier work by Lake of Tears, the album features a drum machine, a minimal guitar approach, and heavy use of keyboards and electronic equipment. Ironically, it featured some of the band's more memorable tunes, although they differ from the "classic" Lake of Tears sound and feel. A remixed version of the song "Sorcerers" was released as a single, with "Nathalie and the Fireflies" as a B-side.

A limited edition digipack version of the album was released alongside the standard version, featuring a cover of the Status Quo song "Is There a Better Way?" as a bonus track.
