The Heard National Bank Building was a building in Jacksonville, Florida, built in 1913. It was the tallest building in Florida for over a decade. [2] It was demolished in 1981 and is now the site of the Bank of America Tower. [3]

History

Construction on the Heard National Bank Building started in 1911. In 1913, the building was erected. Upon completion it had 15 stories, was 180 feet (55 m) tall, and became the tallest building in Florida. It was demolished in 1981 and replaced by the current tallest building in Jacksonville: the Bank of America Tower. The entrance columns to the former building are the only remaining parts of the structure. It is the only one of Florida's tallest buildings to be destroyed. [4]

Bank of America Tower is a skyscraper in the downtown area of Jacksonville, Florida, at the northwest corner of Bay and Laura streets. At 617 ft (188 m), it is the tallest building in Jacksonville, and the seventeenth-tallest in Florida. It was built as the headquarters of Barnett Bank and originally named Barnett Center, but the name was changed to NationsBank Tower in 1998 after Barnett Bank was acquired by NationsBank. NationsBank was soon acquired by Bank of America and the building's name was changed to Bank of America Tower in 1999. The 42-floor structure was designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn, and is constructed of reinforced concrete.
