Helen O'Neill is a camogie player, winner of the Minor Player of the Year award in 2008 [1] and winner of an All Ireland Junior Club Camogie Championship medal with Lavey after beating St Anne's of Dunhill in the final of 2009. [2]
A former member of the Maryfield College, Drumcondra team that won the Junior 'C' secondary schools All Ireland championship.[ citation needed ] Born in Dublin, Helen was able to represent Lavey from a young age through her parents who were from the area and this meant she spent a lot of her time there. She has already captained the minor team to a league and championship double.
She was first selected for her club's Senior team in 2008, a year when she made a name for herself by scoring three important goals as Lavey secured county and provincial honours later that year.
Helen was centre half back, play maker and occasional free-taker for Lavey's All Ireland success of 2009, sending a long free directly over the bar in the replay. That game had went to a replay after some breathless to and fro action resulted in a stalemate. It was seven minutes into the second half of the All Ireland Junior Club Camogie Championship replay of 2009 and Lavey were in some trouble. Up stepped Helen with her stick and in went the ball to the net, giving Lavey a critical goal. They now had a lead of 1-7 to 0-5.
Helen O'Neill's goal proved decisive to the team's overall success in that it caused the game to turn in Lavey's favour as they quickly added six more points to their tally.
