Hellspawn are fictional supernatural warriors from Todd McFarlane's comic book series, Spawn . The main character in the series, Spawn, is himself a Hellspawn. [1]
The Hellspawn are under the command of Malebolgia, the ruler of the eighth realm of hell, and are mainly used as an officer corps for hell's army. They were created by Malebolgia and Mammon. Hellspawn are infused with dark energy matter, called Necroplasm, when they are created. This power is infinite while in Hell and finite when outside. [1]
Most Hellspawns were once human, and made a bargain with Malebolgia to return to Earth for either love or vengeance; he would agree to return them to Earth in exchange for the promise of service in Satan's Hellspawn army. This deal usually backfires on the Hellspawn, as then Malebolgia would return them to Earth several years (or decades) into the future. The Hellspawn are bonded with a symbiotic armor that protects the Host. Their time on Earth is also limited. Each time a Hellspawn uses his powers it brings him closer to a second death, returning him to hell. [1]
The nature of Hellspawn as generals in hell's army is threefold. Either the Spawn will be a successful murderer and will use his energy to kill innocent and evil alike, thereby providing hell with more souls, or he will try to do good by killing bad people. However, this will only supply hell with the souls of the worst kind of murderers (Kincaid, Wynn, etc.). Alternatively, some will refuse to kill and be destroyed by heaven, in which case hell does not lose anything and will just make another Hellspawn.
Eventually it is revealed that at least the last known Hellspawn are not creations of Malebolgia, but rather Mammon, trying to enact a breeding program between the most successful bloodlines represented by his Hellspawn. Al Simmons and Wanda, both related to famous Hellspawn of modern times, are the apex of such a process. However, later issues retcons this as Malebolgia and Violator were the true masterminds behind the hellspawns and their true origins are expanded in Spawn 291, 294, and 295 retcons this as Hellspawns were created by combining the powers of both Heaven and Hell by fusing a white demon and a black angel. Malebolgia was the one to discover them with Violator assisting him in the creation of Hellspawns since the first.
There are other Hellspawn such as Daniel Llanso from the Curse of the Spawn spinoff, [9] as well as Ken Kurosawa, Mangler, Cheveyo, and Caleb from the Shadows of Spawn manga, though it is unknown if they are part of the main series' continuity.
Hellspawn appear in some of the Spawn video games, as well as in the movie and the animated series. Some hellspawn appear as a cameo in Mortal Kombat 11 .
Albert Francis "Al" Simmons, better known as Spawn, is an antihero appearing in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics, as well as in a number of films, television series, and video game adaptations set in the Image Universe. Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1.

Violator is a supervillain who appears in the Spawn comic books published by Image Comics. The character first appeared in Spawn #2 and was created by writer-artist Todd McFarlane.As one of the primary antagonists of the series, He is by far the most recurring villain of the series and Spawn's archenemy. He is also the maker of the Hellspawns, hence, he trains and keeps tabs on them.
Cogliostro is a fictional character in Todd McFarlane's Spawn comic series, set in the Image Universe. Cogliostro was created in 1993 by author Neil Gaiman and artist Todd McFarlane and introduced in Spawn issue #9. Originally depicted as a supporting character, he becomes an antagonist as the series progresses, eventually becoming the supervillain Sinn and the third main antagonist of the series.
Jason Wynn is a supervillain in the Todd McFarlane Image Universe comic book series Spawn. Wynn is the director of the United States Security Group. He is perhaps the most powerful man in the world, and has politicians throughout the government on his payroll. His actions caused Al Simmons' soul to be sent to Hell and transformed into Spawn in the first place, making him a major villain in the comics as a result.
Malebolgia is a supervillain appearing as the original main antagonist in comic books featuring the superhero Spawn and reprised the role in the later issues. Created by writer/artist Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in Spawn #1. The name Malebolgia is derived from the term in Dante's Inferno used to describe Malebolge, the ditches (bolge) in the eighth circle of Hell, where humans who committed the sin Fraud are punished. He is Spawn's former master who serves as one of the major Lords of Hell.

Tiffany is a fictional character in Todd McFarlane's Spawn comic book series. She was first introduced to the series in issues #44 and #45. Tiffany, like fellow angel Angela, is a Hellspawn hunter. Therefore, the most current Hellspawn, Al Simmons, is her primary target. She has a long-standing rivalry with Angela, but since Angela has gone rogue, Tiffany's aim is to fill her place as the top Hellspawn slayer in Heaven's army. In her first attempt to slay Spawn, she was over-zealous and was defeated in a grisly manner. Although she lost the fight, she escaped with her life, since the still inexperienced Spawn did not realize that merely destroying an angel's physical body is not enough to truly kill it. She has not appeared in the comic since.
