Arnold Charles Herber was an American professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons, primarily with the Green Bay Packers. During his Packers tenure from 1930 to 1940, he led the league in passing yards and touchdowns three times and won four NFL Championship Games. Herber retired after 11 seasons in Green Bay, but returned in 1944 with New York Giants, where he played his final two seasons. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966.

Herky the Hawk is the athletics mascot of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Herky is a student dressed in black and gold, including wings made out of fabric, with a headpiece shaped like a hawk's head. Herky was first drawn as a cartoon in 1948, and was first portrayed at a football game in 1959. Periodically, Herky's wardrobe and overall design have been updated. There are currently two different styles of Herky costumes. The version used at football games and related events features Herky wearing a Hawkeye football helmet. The version used at basketball games and other events features Herky with different facial features and no helmet.

The 1965 Maine Black Bears football team was an American football team that represented the University of Maine as a member of the Yankee Conference during the 1965 NCAA College Division football season. In its 15th season under head coach Harold Westerman, the team compiled an 8–2 record, won the Yankee Conference championship, and lost to East Carolina in the 1965 Tangerine Bowl. Alan Riley and Walter Hirst were the team captains.
