Heritage of the March is a series of 185 vinyl records of marches and galops released from 1973 to 1988. It remains the largest single march music record series in history, featuring close to 3,000 different marches.
The records were distributed free by march collector Robert Hoe and the series was continued after his death by the Robert Hoe Foundation created by his wife, Marilyn C. Hoe. [1] Most records featured the marches of two composers (one per side) played by a military, college, high school, or community band. The albums were given volume numbers 1 through 90 and A through QQQQ. [2]

The liner notes from the first record noted that the series was not meant to be chronological, the order in which composers were presented was determined solely by logistical matters, and the total number of albums in the series was not predetermined. The liner notes also stipulated that "The marches selected have rarely, if ever, appeared in commerically[sic] recorded form. The most popular and widely played marches will be omitted for obvious reasons of policy." [4] Later, the series was envisioned as 15 albums featuring an American composer on one side of the record and a foreign composer on the reverse. All of these early albums were performed by the United States Navy Band under the direction of Donald W. Stauffer.
As the series continued to grow, other military bands in the United States were included with the United States Coast Guard Band, United States Military Academy Band, and the Armed Forces Bicentennial Band recording volumes 16 through 30. Starting with volume 31, the series was opened to a wider number of bands both inside and outside the armed services, including bands outside the United States. [5] These recordings formed the "numbered" portion of the series. The "lettered" portion of the series presented additional music by composers who had already been featured in the numbered albums. [6]
There were a few irregularities in the series' numbering and lettering system. Volumes 89 and OOOO were omitted. Volume QQQQ was erroneously labeled as the previously released Volume PPPP. Volumes 54 and 84 were each two-record sets. All together, there were 91 numbered and 94 lettered albums. [7]
The first album was recorded by the United States Navy Band for release in 1973 and featured marches composed by Robert Browne Hall and Carl Teike. [8]
A large variety of composers were featured on the recordings. Some of the most recorded include Fred Jewell, Karl L. King, Monroe Althouse, Russell Alexander, Thomas Brooke, Roland F. Seitz, James M. Fulton, Hermann Blankenburg, Charles Barnhouse, Julius Fučík, and W. P. Chambers. Some records do not feature a specific composer, but are themed albums, such as circus marches, marches of Quebec, or marches featuring the euphonium. Some albums also included concert works or marches from "miscellaneous" composers.

Robert Hoe obtained most of the sheet music himself for the collection, which was meticulously cataloged and inspected by him and his "staff". There are almost no marches recorded more than once in the series. Many of the records feature specific notes on the marches, either given by the conductor of the group or by Hoe himself. Every album contains notes on topics such as the Heritage of the March series, historical backgrounds on composers, instrumentation, the band recorded, or various personal stories.
The series included some material other than marches, including waltzes and overtures written by the featured composer. Hoe, an avid fan of the euphonium, recorded several euphonium solos such as "Elfriede" by George Swift, and an arrangement of "Figaro" by Paul Yoder. Hoe also allowed bands to record their own personal favorites, and were sometimes used as "fillers" for the LPs.
Many marches that were originally recorded for use in the Heritage of the March series but not included in the LPs were later released as part of the three-volume Navy Band Leftovers and four-volume Miscellaneous Marches. A spinoff series was also created called the Heritage of John Philip Sousa, consisting of 18 LPs featuring Sousa's marches and operettas performed by the U.S. Marine Band. [9]
The Heritage of the March records were previously available free of charge to the friends of Robert Hoe and to those who requested them from the Robert Hoe Foundation. Bands who were recorded also received their own records for professional or personal use. The records were produced in small batches of between 600 and 2,000 copies of each record. [6] The records themselves were never commercially available to the public. Today, it is possible to find these records in libraries, second-hand record stores, and other music archives.
Digital copies of select volumes were officially made available for purchase on Amazon and iTunes beginning in 2010. [10] [11] Altissimo Recordings, in collaboration with the Robert Hoe Foundation, began making the collection available as compact discs with the release of the Heritage of John Philip Sousa in Summer 2011, [12] followed by the first two volumes of the Heritage of the March in 2012. [13]
Karl L. King was a United States march music bandmaster and composer. He is best known as the composer of "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite".
Josef Franz Wagner was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer. He is sometimes referred to as "The Austrian March King".
Russell Alexander was an entertainer and composer, active primarily with vaudeville shows and musical comedy organizations.
Hermann Ludwig Blankenburg was a German composer of military marches.
Getty Herschel Huffine was an American music composer, trombonist and tuba player. He was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on August 25, 1889, the eldest of four children.
Melvin H. Ribble was an American cornetist, baritone hornist, and prolific composer and arranger of concert band music.
Oreste Riva was an Italian composer. In 1920 he won a silver medal in the art competitions of the Olympic Games for his "Marcia trionfale".
Frank Hoyt Losey was an American musician, composer, and arranger of band and orchestra music. He is credited with over 400 compositions and 2,500 arrangements including his most recognized composition, Gloria March.
Dave Black is an American composer and co-author of numerous books, including Alfred's Drum Method,Alfred's Beginning Drumset Method,Alfred's Kid's Drum Course,Contemporary Brush Techniques,Drumset Independence and Syncopation,Living Praise, Cymals: A Crash Course,The Essential Dictionary of Orchestration,A Jazz Diary, and Sound Innovations for Concert Band. Simone Mantia was an American baritone horn/euphonium virtuoso and also trombone artist at the turn of the twentieth century. He was both a performer and administrator with many American band and orchestral ensembles. On baritone/euphonium he is often cited as the master of the instrument in his time.
The United States Armed Forces Bicentennial Band was a music ensemble composed of members of all branches of the United States military and some musicians selected from music schools across the country. The band toured the United States, Canada, and Mexico to celebrate the United States Bicentennial. The program was sponsored by the Department of Defense and headquartered at the army base in Fort Meade, Maryland.
Frank A. Panella was a composer and arranger for band, best known for his march On the Square. Panella was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and began playing clarinet at age seven. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, taught at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Tech, served as director of the Grand Army Band and the Westinghouse Air Brake Company Band, and founded the Panella Music Company. He died in Crafton, Pennsylvania at the age of 75.
Edward Victor Cupero was an Italian American composer, arranger, and cornetist best known for his screamer Honey Boys on Parade which he composed for the traveling band of George "Honey Boy" Evans.
Harold Josiah Crosby was a composer and arranger of band and orchestra music best known for his marches. Crosby was born in Dexter, Maine and studied at Colby College, the University of Maine, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He played trombone, euphonium (baritone), piano, and organ for several orchestras and theater ensembles. Crosby's marches rose to prominence in the early 20th century, with several pieces becoming staples of military bands during World War I. He died in New York City on January 18, 1920. Three volumes of the Heritage of the March record series were dedicated to his work.
Gian Battista Mantegazzi was a Swiss-Italian composer best known for his marches. He led the Zurich City Band from 1928 until his death in 1958. Four volumes of the Heritage of the March record series featured his work.
Franz von Blon was a German composer and bandmaster best known for his concert marches, operettas, and the serenade Sizilietta. He was born in Berlin on July 16, 1861 and attended Stern's Conservatory of Music. He began composing during his military service from 1880 to 1883. He founded the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Orchestra, with which he toured Europe and the United States, conducting concerts at the 1904 World's Fair. He died near Berlin in 1945.
Felice DeMatteo was an Italian-American composer, arranger, and bandmaster best known for his marches, waltzes, and polkas. He was born in Pizzo di Calabria, Italy and attended a musical academy in Padua. He served in the Italian military where he became an army bandmaster and performed before the King of Italy. He composed many of his works after his discharge from the military. In 1903, he moved to New York City and set up music studios for instrumentalists. DeMatteo organized several bands in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania before his death in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1929.
Monroe A. Althouse was a composer and bandmaster best known for his parade marches. He was born in Centre Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania and spent his youth working on the family farm. He learned to play the violin, trombone, and baritone as he toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during his teens. After performing with several local bands, orchestras, and theater ensembles near Reading, Pennsylvania, he organized the pit orchestra for the Rajah Theater and was selected to lead the Ringgold Band. He became friends with John Philip Sousa and the two composers stayed in contact as each toured the country. Althouse co-founded the James S. Althouse & Co. music publisher. He retired from conducting in 1922 due to poor health. After three years of illness, he died in Reading on October 12, 1924. Five volumes of the Heritage of the March series were dedicated to his compositions.
Viktor Widkvist (1881–1952) was a Swedish military musician and composer.
Paul Edmund Bierley was an American music historian. Among his awards were a Society for American Music Lifetime Achievement Award and receiving an Honorary Doctor of Music from Ohio State University.
