Hermitage, Saint Croix is a settlement on the island of Saint Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. In 2014, Helen Worth, a British Actress well known for her portrayal of the character Gail Platt on the show Coronation Street visited the island and posted a selfie of her there to her Twitter account.

History

Hermitage (Rings Qnarter No. 5, and Princes Qnarter No. 1, Centre Police District, Christiansteds Jurisdiction) is a former sugar plantation. As of 1816, it had a total area of 300 hectares of which 195 acres were planted with sugar canes and 105 was under other cultivation. 1816, 107 enslaved labourers were present on the estate.

[[File::Plantagen Hermitage.jpg|thumb|Hermitage in c. 1900.]] On 19 July 1817, the dealing of deceased Alexander Tovver closed and the half of this property was transferred (value Ps. 94,781) to John, Alexander and George Tovver, Jannett, Margreth, Euphæmia, Anna Flora and Jane Tower. The other half was dicided between Doctor James Tower and after his death to his children, John, James, Margareth, Mary, Elizabeth and Janet Tovver (pne quarter) and William Tower (one quarter). On 24 February 1829, the half of this property was sold by the attorney to the estate of deceased Alexander Tower, to Alexander Tower (the half of Strawberry Hili included) for £20,000. On 1 May 1852, Hermitage was sold by Alexander Tower in his own behalf and as attorney to John Tower's heirs, to H. C. Ratcliffe for $16,000. [1]

Of the 140 acres half 70 acres belong to the Bond family which since 1956 has owned a federally registered Caribbean Mahogany Reforestation Tree Farm. The property adjoins the Estate Thomas research property belonging to the International Institute for Tropical Forestry of the United States Forest Service.

The Danish slave trade occurred separately in two different periods: the trade in European slaves during the Viking Age, from the 8th to 10th century; and the Danish role in selling African slaves during the Atlantic slave trade, which commenced in 1733 and ended in 1807 when the abolition of slaves was announced. The location of the latter slave trade primarily occurred in the Danish West Indies where slaves were tasked with many different manual labour activities, primarily working on sugar plantations. Estate Botany Bay, near Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

George Ryan was an Irish-born Danish merchant, ship owner, banker and planter. He continued running a trading house and shipping firm founded by his brother Phillip Ryan. He owned the property at Sankt Annæ Plads 7 in Copenhagen and the sugar plantation Mary's Fancy on Saint Croix in the Danish West Indies.
