Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio, is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro is the second-most-populous city in Brazil and the sixth-most-populous city in the Americas. Notably, it is listed by the GaWC as a beta global city and part of Rio de Janeiro is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Guanabara Bay is an oceanic bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil, at 412 square kilometres (159 sq mi), with a perimeter of 143 kilometres (89 mi).

There were no player age restrictions for teams participating in the women's competition.
Football 7-a-side at the 2016 Summer Paralympics was held in Rio de Janeiro at the Deodoro Olympic Park, from 8 September to 16 September. Football 7-a-side is played by athletes with cerebral palsy, a condition characterized by impairment of muscular coordination, stroke, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). 112 footballers are expected to compete for one set of medals.

The 2007 Parapan American Games, officially the III Parapan American Games, were a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, celebrated in the tradition of the Parapan American Games as governed by the Americas Paralympic Committee, held from August 12 to 19, 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Organized by the Rio de Janeiro Organizing Committee and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), it marked the first time that the Parapan American Games were staged in the same city and followed directly after the Pan American Games.
