History

Built in 1892 by (Ray Benjamin) R.B. Hinkly, a prominent local businessman and one of Luverne's founders, the house is executed with Queen Anne design features. The house is constructed from Sioux Quartzite mined from Hinkly's own quarry (now part of Blue Mounds State Park). At the time it was built, it was thought to be the "most handsome house" in all of southern Minnesota. [3] [4]

Donated to the Rock County Historical Society in 1959, the Hinkly House Museum features twelve rooms, two bathrooms, and a spacious attic, all restored to reflect the style of the late 1800s. Visitors can tour the house and period furnishings, wallpapers recreated to match the originals, and ceilings that echo the designs of the era. [3]

A unique feature of the Hinkly House is the basement tunnel connecting to a hidden dynamite storage room in the backyard, a reminder of Hinkly's involvement in quarrying. The careful restoration throughout the house offers a glimpse into the lives of a wealthy family in late 19th-century Minnesota. [5] [4]

R.B. Hinkly

Hinkly's career spanned law, media, and finance. Before banking, he practiced law and edited a newspaper in Claremont, Iowa. He then played a key role in establishing financial institutions across Minnesota and South Dakota. He founded the Luverne Brick and Tile Company, Luverne's largest industry. In addition, he owned several thousand acres of land in Rock County and Texas.[ citation needed ]

Operations

The heirs of the R. B. Hinkly family presented the house to the Rock County Historical Society in 1959. Today the Rock County Historical Society owns and manages the day-to-day operations of house museum. The museum is open for public tours seasonally from June to August and also anytime by appointment. [5] The house also occasionally hosts exhibits such as a replica of President Abraham Lincoln's coffin in the house's parlor room. [6]

Pipestone National Monument is located in southwestern Minnesota, just north of the city of Pipestone, Minnesota. Those known to actually occupied the site chronologically are the Yankton Dakota, Iowa, and Omaha peoples. The Quarries were considered a neutral territory in the historic past where all tribal nations could quarry stone for ceremonial pipes. The catlinite, or "pipestone", is traditionally used to make ceremonial pipes. They are vitally important to Plains Indian traditional practices. Archeologists believe the site has been in use for over 3000 years with Minnesota pipestone having been found in ancient North American burial mounds across a large geographic area.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sioux Quartzite</span> Type of quartzite rock

The Sioux Quartzite is a Proterozoic quartzite that is found in the region around the intersection of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, and correlates with other rock units throughout the upper midwestern and southwestern United States. It was formed by braided river deposits, and its correlative units are thought to possibly define a large sedimentary wedge that once covered the passive margin on the then-southern side of the North American craton. In human history, it provided the catlinite, or pipestone, that was used by the Plains Indians to carve ceremonial pipes. With the arrival of Europeans, it was heavily quarried for building stone, and was used in many prominent structures in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and shipped to construction sites around the Midwest. Sioux Quartzite has been and continues to be quarried in Jasper, Minnesota at the Jasper Stone Company and Quarry, which itself was posted to the National Register of Historic Places on January 5, 1978. Jasper, Minnesota contains many turn-of-the-century quartzite buildings, including the school, churches and several other public and private structures, mostly abandoned.
