Hisn Murad or Murad is a small coastal fishing village in the Lahij Governorate of the Bab-el-Mandeb in the south-western tip of Yemen overlooking the Gulf of Aden. It lies on the border of the Lahij Governorate and the Ta'izz Governorate. The island of Perim lies just off the coast. It is connected by road to Dhubab and Mocha in the north and As Suqayyan, Al Bahiyah, Am Juhar and Aden in the east. [1] [2]

Lahij City in Yemen

Lahij or Lahej is a city and an area located between Ta'izz and Aden in Yemen. From the 18th to the 20th century, its rulers were of the Al-Sallami family who with, Al-Abdali, Al-Ramada, Al-Sindi and al-Aqrabi, claims relation to Ahl al-Bayt. Lahij was the capital city of Sultanate of Lahej, a protectorate of the British Empire until 1967, when the sultan was expelled and the city became a part of People's Republic of South Yemen.

Abyan is a governorate of Yemen. The Abyan region was historically part of the Fadhli Sultanate. It was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army militant group. Its capital is the city of Zinjibar. This governorate is noted for its agriculture, in particular the cultivation of date palms and animal husbandry.

Broadcasting began in Yemen in the 1940s when it was still divided into South by the British and North by Imami ruling system. After the unity of Yemen in 1990, Yemeni government reformed its corporations and founded some additional radio channels which can broadcast locally. However it drew back after 1994 due to destroyed infrastructures by the civil war. In 1995 it commenced its first TV broadcasting abroad and since then there has been some gradual increase in its radio and television channels most of which belong to the government.

South Yemen insurgency

The South Yemen insurgency was a series of protests and attacks on government forces in southern Yemen between 2009 and 2014. Although the violence was blamed on elements within the southern secessionist movement, leaders of the group maintained that their aims of independence were to be achieved through peaceful means, and claimed that attacks were from ordinary citizens in response to the government's provocative actions. The insurgency came amid the Shia insurgency in the country's north that was led by Houthi communities. Southern leaders led a brief, unsuccessful secession in 1994 following unification. Many of them were involved in the secession movement. Southern separatist insurgents were active mainly in the area of former South Yemen, but also in Ad Dali' Governorate, which was not a part of the independent southern state.

South Arabia during World War I

The campaign in South Arabia during World War I was a minor struggle for control of the port city of Aden, an important way station for ships on their way from Asia to the Suez Canal. The British Empire declared war on the Ottoman Empire on 5 November 1914, and the Ottomans responded with their own declaration on 11 November. From the beginning, the Ottomans had planned an invasion of Britain's Aden Protectorate in cooperation with the local Arab tribes. The Ottomans had gathered in some strength on the Cheikh Saïd, a peninsula which juts out into the Red Sea towards the island of Perim.

Am Juhar is a small village near the coast in the Lahij Governorate of south-western Yemen. It is located 96.6 km east by road from Hisn Murad and 101 kilometres west of Aden. The village is primarily agricultural with a delta of wadis in the area and fields. Qawah is one of the nearest settlements to the southeast.

The Battle of Aden International Airport broke out in the early morning hours of 19 March 2015, when Yemen Army units loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh attacked the airport in Aden, Yemen. The airport was defended by soldiers and guards supporting Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, Yemen's internationally recognised president.

Major general Mahmoud al-Subaihi is a Yemeni military officer. He served in the cabinet of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi as defence minister. In the Yemen Army, he holds the rank of major general. He was appointed to head the Ministry of Defence by Prime Minister Khaled Bahah in November 2014.

Shabwah campaign (March–August 2015) Campaign of the Yemeni Civil War

The Shabwah campaign was a campaign for control of the Shabwah Governorate of Yemen, between the Houthis and Yemen Army units loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh on one side, and militiamen and Yemen Army units loyal to Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi on the other side. The offensive was also launched during a previously started AQAP offensive.

Lahij insurgency

The Lahij insurgency was a guerrilla war waged by tribesmen loyal to Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi against the Houthis and Yemen Army units loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, who controlled most of the Lahij Governorate of Yemen. In late July, Pro-Hadi forces had launched an offensive to recapture Al Anad Air Base and rest of Lahij Governorate. On 4 August, Pro-Hadi forces had retaken full control of the Lahij Governorate.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Yemen Province

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Yemen Province is a branch of the militant Islamist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), active in Yemen. ISIL announced the group's formation on 13 November 2014.

Major General Aidarus Qassem Abdulaziz al-Zoubaidi is the current president and commander of the Southern Transitional Council and the de facto leader of the Southern Movement in Yemen. He previously served as the governor of the Aden province from December 2015 to April 2017.

Federalization of Yemen

The federalization of Yemen or the Federal Republic of Yemen was the final outcome of the National Dialogue Conference, the Dialogue members also agreed that Yemen would be transformed into a 6-region federal system. The regions would be Azal, Saba, Janad and Tihama in the north, Aden and Hadramawt in the south. Sana’a will have a special status and not be part of any region. Aden, the former southern capital, would also have a special status but will be part of Aden region. Azal, Saba, Janad and Tihama would be northern provinces where Aden and Hadramawt would be southern. The proposal also includes changing the title of "Governorate" to "state".

Security Belt

The Security Belt Forces is a paramilitary force based in Southern Yemen and forms the elite military wing of the Southern Transitional Council. The force operates in the governorates of Aden, Lahij and Abyan and is trained and heavily supported by the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. The Security Belt has fought against Islah, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s Yemeni branch.

Anad base drone strike

The Anad base drone strike was a Houthi attack carried out on 10 January 2019 in the Lahij Governorate near the southern port city of Aden. The strike killed six people attending a military parade, including the head of Yemeni Intelligence, and wounded at least 25 military personnel including a number of senior officers from the Yemeni army, the country's chief of staff, and a government official.
