History of Guns are an English metamodern cross-genre group combining elements of Industrial, punk, electronica, ebm, edm, goth, rock, metal and avant-garde from Hertfordshire, England. The current members are Del Alien, Max Rael, Caden Clarkson and Jamu Knight.

Their name comes from the title of one of their earliest songs, an anti-gun song written about the Dunblane massacre. [1]

Primarily a studio project, History of Guns played live sporadically throughout their career including the Whitby Gothic Weekend and both Futurepunk23 and Back to the Futurepunk. [2] [3]

They contributed the track Jezebel and the Philistines to the debut album The Excommunication of Christ by The Meads of Asphodel in 2001, and further contributed to their subsequent releases Jihad / Freezing Moon (2002), Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua (2003) and Damascus Steel (2005). (credited as either History Of Guns or Max Rael). [4] [5] [6]

In 2007, their song Your Obedient Servants came in at no.19 in journalist Mick Mercer's list of Top 30 Goth Singles of All Time. [7]

In April 2008, Line Out Records sponsored the Whitby Gothic Weekend bi-annual football tournament so teams were competing for, 'The History of Guns – Acedia Challenge Cup'. [8]

Their third album ACEDIA was released on 7 July 2008 on Line Out Records and was awarded 9/10 by Rock Sound on 3 July 2008.

In August 2015 they were featured in the Beautiful Noise exhibition at Hertford Museum of notable bands from the area. [9]

After going on hiatus in 2011 they returned in 2022 with an industrial rock/metal album Forever Dying in Your Eyes, and are due to follow it up with the long-planned electronic album Half Light in 2024.

History

Phase One: Beginning (1996–1999)

History of Guns was formed in February 1996 as 'Pre-Hate Machine' by Stagger Lee with Max Rael and Del Alien. Del Alien renamed the band 'History of Guns' after a song he had written about the Dunblane Massacre in mid 1996. [10]

Their first demo Reformation Day was recorded in a day at Discipline Studios in Tottenham in July 1996. In September 1996 Gary 'The Reverend' Hughes joined the band as a regular part-time collaborator. The band signed up with Top Knotch Management in 1997 and recorded a second demo Sold on Secrets in Chelmsford. In 1999, the band acquired a PC, and began recording with Cubase.

The first track recorded in this fashion was "Random Death Bag" which appeared on the third instalment of the No Holy Additive compilation CD from Godreah Zine, followed by the Little Miss Suicide EP which was released on the newly formed Liquid Len record label, and an unreleased demo album called 'Enough Is Too Much LP'. Stagger Lee quit the band with the release of their first CD, Little Miss Suicide EP in 1999.

Phase Two: Liquid Len Records (2001–2006)

In 2001, Godreah zine contacted the band with a request for them to appear on the fourth and final instalment of the No Holy Additive compilation CD. Del Alien and Max Rael recorded their first new material for two years, namely, Reconstructing Terror, Fact and Disconnect, they also completed two unfinished tracks left over from Enough Is Too Much sessions namely, 57 Days and Burn, which eventually got released as the Disconnect EP by the Liquid Len record label in 2002.

Kevin Gerrish joined the band briefly in 2002 during the writing and recording of The Mirror Pond LP. Weeks before its release History of Guns issued a press released saying that they'd been "consumed by business rhetoric" and were thus "downsizing the album into an EP". Although many of the remaining tracks remain unreleased, the track 'Psycho' was included as a bonus track on the second edition of the CD, and 'Sunday Lunchtime (A Family Portrait)' and 'Soaked' were included on the 2007 release 'Issue Six:Archive One – Make It Look Like An Accident'.

History of Guns released their debut album Flashes of Light LP in 2004. A dense slab of atmospheric dark electronica devoid of any guitars, [10] noted for its unusual structure of having two long opening songs, four short middle songs, then two long closing songs.

Recruiting a live band in 2004 History of Guns performed gigs around the south east of England as an edgy punk band, not performing any of the songs from their debut album. The last date was filmed and released on DVD as "Twenty Seven Paces".

Their second album APOPHENIA was released in November 2005. It was named after the medical condition of seeing patterns in seemingly random data, Apophenia. This time the album was structured in two distinct halves, and every track on the album written and performed in a different genre. [10]

Responding to an interview with Dark Futures zine in which History of Guns said they worked very quickly, to which the interviewer replied "how did it take two years to make your new album then?" History of Guns announced a series of free limited edition bi-monthly CDs, starting with the March 2006 release UDDERS available via their website.

In April 2006, they played their debut at the Whitby Gothic Weekend. In November 2006, the band announced that they had signed to Line Out Records and would no longer be able to keep to their schedule of releasing a new EP every other month whilst they wrote and recorded their third album to be titled ACEDIA .

Phase Three: Line Out Records (2007 – 2011)

History of Guns' third album ACEDIA was released on 7 July 2008 on Line Out Records. The album title came from the lyrics to Of Walking Abortion by Manic Street Preachers from their The Holy Bible album [11] The inside sleeve artwork features a copy of No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai. Downwithfreedom.com provided an animated music video for the track 'Exhaust Fumes' which appeared on YouTube in October 2008. [12]

In July 2009, History of Guns released a three track EP focussing on The Spice Girls, featuring Slice Up Your Wife which incorporated elements of the original Spice Girls song Spice Up Your Life described by The Dreaded Press as "a sub-three-minute slice of staggering satire and vengeful rage" [13]

On 21 October that year, the band released their fourth album, Whatever You Do, Don't Turn Up at Twelve and then went on hiatus.

Phase Four: Return (2022 – current)

Del Alien and Max Rael returned in 2022 with History Of Guns with new guitarist Jamu with the industrial rock/metal flavoured album Forever Dying in Your Eyes.

Remains is a rarities album by the English rock band the Only Ones, released in June 1984 by Closer Records. This collection combines pre-Only Ones recordings from November 1975 with Only Ones demos, many from August 1976. Both sessions took place at Tooting Studios in South London. The 1975 titles — "Watch You Drown", "My Rejection", "Don't Hold Your Breath" and "I Only Wanna Be Your Friend" — also feature contributions from Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook, Gordon Edwards, drummer Alan Platt, and John Perry playing bass guitar. These demos pre-date the recording of the first Only Ones single, "Lovers of Today". Subsequent tracks all feature the regular Only Ones line-up.

The Last Dance is the fourth studio album by the American nu metal band 40 Below Summer. It was released on October 31 (Halloween) 2006 via Crash Music. The single "Relapse" from the album had a video directed and produced by Frankie Nasso. The CD/DVD combo was released on October 31, 2006, via Crash Music Inc. The two-disc release features nine demo versions of songs intended for their third and final major LP, and a DVD with the band's "last" performance at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey.

Children on Stun is the name of an English gothic rock band. Formed in 1991, the original line-up consisted of Neil Ash, Simon Manning, Peter Finnemore and Simon Treen.

Alan Davey is an English musician, best known as the former bassist with the rock band Hawkwind. He is the original bass player in Gunslinger which started in 1979 and is still the bass player and vocalist for Gunslinger. He has played and recorded with Meads of Asphodel, Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Spirits Burning, Bedouin (1998–2003). He formed with the newly re-imagined Hawklords in 2008 with Nik Turner until 2012 and since then formed The Psychedelic Warlords in 2013 until 2015.

The Mommyheads are an indie pop band who played from around 1987 through 1998, disbanded for a decade, and then reformed in 2008. Starting in New York City as the brainchild of singer Adam Cohen, the band produced a string of quirky and highly inventive releases on various independent labels, most notably Simple Machines. Their music has been compared to XTC and 80s King Crimson. They relocated to San Francisco in 1990. The band signed to Geffen Records in 1997, producing a single album for the label before breaking up in 1998. Jon Pareles from the NY Times wrote that their Geffen LP had "perfectly balanced melodies". They reunited to record a new CD in 2008 and have been active ever since.

Damascus Steel is the third full-length studio album by the United Kingdom-based experimental black metal band The Meads of Asphodel. It was their last album to feature contributions from Max Rael.

Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua is the second full length studio album from the black metal band The Meads of Asphodel. It was released on Supernal Music in 2003. This album was the first to feature the new line up of J D Tait and Deaorth [Ragnarok] sharing the bass duties with Hawkwind’s Alan Davey. Huw Lloyd langton plays lead guitar and Vincent Crowley from Acheron does some narration, and Max Rael from History Of Guns and Mirai from Sigh play keyboards. A Rabbi from Golders Green in London added some Hebrew verse on the track 80 grains of Sand. Paul Carter from Thus Defiled played keyboards on the track "Sons of Anak Rise".

<i>The Mill Hill Sessions</i> 2004 studio album by The Meads of Asphodel

The Mill Hill Sessions is a live album released by the black metal band The Meads of Asphodel. It was released on Godreah Records in 2004, unlike the before releases which were released on Supernal Music. Two live sessions were recorded at the Mill Hill studios in North London in 2006. On 24.11.03 featuring various old tracks plus a cover of Sepultura’s "Refuse/Resist". The second, 17.7.04, was a 25-minute work in progress jam featuring Hawkwind Huw Lloyd Langton on lead/slide guitar. The "My Beautiful Genocide" track was aired here for the first time in its pre production format.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cauda Pavonis</span> English deathrock band

Cauda Pavonis are an English deathrock band founded in 1998, by Su Farr and Dave Wainwright. Originally conceived as a 'dark romantic' experience, Cauda Pavonis broke onto the UK goth circuit supporting acts such as Star Industry and Inkubus Sukkubus. At the outset Cauda Pavonis were noted for their consciously-minimalist synthesized melodies and their use of live drums. They were described by Mick Mercer in his book 21st Century Goth as a "Dark duo from UK with a bright future" and by Starvox as "The most old school sounding goth since Rozz Williams hung himself". Since then the line-up has grown and the band have appeared twice at the Whitby Gothic Weekend and the Wave-Gotik-Treffen. In 2003 and again in 2007, Cauda Pavonis were the focus of the ITV television programme, Magick Eve.
