Early life

Ryan Henderson grew up without a musical background. When he was in high school, Henderson was into hip-hop and rap. His friends took him to the Woodford Folk Festival to see the folk and indie pop group Angus & Julia Stone. This music inspired him to learn the guitar. [5]

Matt Carins grew up in Brisbane surrounded by music, starting with his family. His father is in a local cover band, and also writes his own music. His mother plays and teaches piano and flute. Carins' sister plays the piano and his brother is in an alternative rock band. [6]

Career

Henderson and Carins were introduced by a mutual friend in 2013; at the time, they had day jobs as a civil engineer and carpenter, respectively. [7] They soon began recording music in another friend's garage, uploading the tracks to SoundCloud in 2014. [8] In a short time, what would become the Drifting and Wanderlust EPs garnered a million streams. [9] The pair continued to record music as a band, even when Henderson was living in Canada and Carins was in England. [10] As their music took off on Spotify, Soundcloud and social media, they were able to leave their day jobs to focus on creating music, trading files online. [11] [12] [13] During the COVID-19 pandemic, Carins and Henderson built a production studio and a soundproof space to practice and record their music. [14]

Hollow Coves' debut album, Moments, was released in 2019, which features the single “When We Were Young.” They received acclaim for their “stunning harmonies” from Billboard Magazine, [15] Ones to Watch declared Moments “all-around uplifting, adventurous, atmospheric, vibey, and dynamic,” [16] and Clash Magazine said that Moments evokes “an atmospheric wanderlust to life.” [17]

Their sophomore studio album Nothing to Lose was released In January 2024. It was produced by Matt Corby. [18] Hollow Coves collaborated with National Park Foundation [19] for their North American tour in support of Nothing to Lose. With every ticket sold, Hollow Coves donated one dollar to the National Park Foundation’s mission to preserve nature. [20] They performed “On The Way” from the album on the Kelly Clarkson Show, taped at Zion Canyon Mesa in support of the NPF. [21]

They have been on tour with Tom Walker, The Paper Kites, Passenger, Vance Joy, and The Lumineers. [22] Hollow Coves have performed at numerous festivals such as SOMMO Fest 2025, [23] Open Air Gampel 2025, [24] Lalala Festival 2024, [25] and Osheaga Festival 2023. [26]
