The Music (formerly known as and now incorporating Drum Media) is an online Australian music magazine. It previously existed as a street press devoted to long-form music journalism and commentary, music news, and artist interviews. In its printed form, it was based in Sydney and distributed throughout Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Canberra and surrounding areas. [1] The magazine changed its name to The Music (incorporating Drum Media) in 2013, following the merge with two other magazines, Brisbane's Time Off and Melbourne's Inpress , owned by Street Press Australia. In 2020 the print edition was paused.
Drum Media was founded in 1990 as a free weekly tabloid-sized music magazine (street press).
The first issue of Drum Media appeared on 16 September 1990 with a distribution of 40,000 and featured Midnight Oil on the cover. The magazine had been established after the entire staff of the long-running Sydney street press magazine On The Street staged a mass walk out on 6 September after a dispute with the owner over work conditions and pay. Following a meeting at the Excelsior Hotel in Surry Hills, it was decided to start a new magazine with editor Margaret Cott and her sister, advertising manager Jennifer Cott, daughters of Mac Cott, Founding Editor of the Southern Highlands News, Bowral, providing the initial capital. The magazine rented its first office in Orwell Street, Potts Point and the first issue was released ten days later. [2]
A separate weekly issue began circulating in Perth in September 2006. Publishers Craig and Leigh Treweek bought Drum Media in February 2006 and consolidated it with Melbourne street magazine Inpress under the Street Press Australia banner. [3] Craig Treweek said at the time, "This is a great opportunity to build a strong music media outlet that is supportive of the local music scene at a grass roots level." [4]
The last issue of Sydney's Drum Media was number 1172 dated 7 August 2013. The final Perth edition was number 350 dated 8 August 2013. [5]
On 14 August 2013, Street Press Australia launched the first issue of The Music (incorporating Drum Media, Inpress and Time Off), as a free national music magazine with additional columns on topics about popular culture. [3] The Music printed Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane editions but ceased publication in 2020. [6] The final editions were published in March 2020, but they have continued to publish content online.
Street Press Australia was later rebranded as Handshake, and in October 2021 they sold The Music to SGC Media, owners of music titles Purple Sneakers and Countrytown. At the same time it was announced the print edition of The Music was "on hold". [7]
In September 2007, the readership of Drum Media throughout its distribution area in New South Wales was audited at 125,000. The magazine was published every Tuesday and distributed primarily throughout music stores, hotels and entertainment venues, cafes and university campuses in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Canberra, as well as satellite areas including Wyong and Gosford and the Blue Mountains. In Western Australia, the readership was estimated at 100,000 with distribution covering Perth, Bunbury, Margaret River, Geraldton and Albany.
The West Australian is the only locally edited daily newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia. It is owned by Seven West Media (SWM), as is the state's other major newspaper, The Sunday Times. It is the second-oldest continuously produced newspaper in Australia, having been published since 1833. It tends to have conservative leanings, and has mostly supported the Liberal–National Party Coalition. It has Australia's largest share of market penetration of any newspaper in the country.
The Australian Women's Weekly, sometimes known as simply The Weekly, is an Australian monthly women's magazine published by Are Media in Sydney and founded in 1933. For many years it was the number one magazine in Australia before being outsold by the Australian edition of Better Homes and Gardens in 2014. As of February 2019, The Weekly has overtaken Better Homes and Gardens again, coming out on top as Australia's most read magazine. The magazine invested in the 2020 film I Am Woman about Helen Reddy, singer and feminist icon.
The Australian Financial Review (AFR) is an Australian business-focused, compact daily newspaper covering the current business and economic affairs of Australia and the world. The newspaper is based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; owned by Nine Entertainment and has been published continuously since its founding in 1951. The AFR, along with the rest of Fairfax Media, was sold to Nine Entertainment for more than A$2.3 billion. The AFR is published in tabloid format six times a week, whilst providing 24/7 online coverage through its website. In November 2019, the AFR reached 2.647 million Australians through both print and digital mediums (Mumbrella).
Inpress was a free weekly tabloid-sized music magazine that was published in Melbourne, and was released in the Geelong and Mornington Peninsula areas of Victoria, Australia. The magazine was published by Street Press Australia on a weekly basis every Wednesday.
Cosmos is a science magazine published in Adelaide, South Australia, by the Royal Institution of Australia that covers science globally. It appears four times a year in print as Cosmos Magazine, and the online edition is updated daily with news as well as long features and multi-media content, and includes the print magazine content. Cosmos Weekly is a subscription-based weekly online edition published on Fridays, and a podcast was launched in April 2022.
Farrago is the student publication for the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia published by the University of Melbourne Student Union. It is the oldest student publication in Australia. It was first published on 3 April 1925.
In 1975, Brisbane's first FM radio station began broadcasting from a studio at the University of Queensland Student Union. 4ZZ became a catalyst for the development of original music in the city. Bands such as The Saints, The Go-Betweens, gerrymander and the boundaries, The Riptides and The Laughing Clowns established an ecosystem for alternative music that continues to flourish.
Go-Set was the first Australian pop music newspaper, published weekly from 2 February 1966 to 24 August 1974, and was founded in Melbourne by Phillip Frazer, Peter Raphael and Tony Schauble. It spawned the original Australian edition of Rolling Stone magazine in late 1972.
Time Off was a free weekly tabloid-sized music magazine that was originally distributed in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The magazine began on campus in 1976 at the University of Queensland as an initiative of co-editors Rob Cameron and Bruce Dickson, and was originally printed on A4 glossy stock. While then circulated free on campus, it was simultaneously released for limited edition purchase through South-East Queensland newsagents. Commenting on its status as a pioneering cultural production of its type for Australia, Phillip Adams at the time described it as "a remarkable achievement".
Rolling Stone Australia is the Australian edition of the United States' Rolling Stone magazine devoted to music, politics, and popular culture, published monthly. The Australian version of Rolling Stone was initially published in 1970 as a supplement in Revolution magazine published by Monash University student Phillip Frazer. It was launched as a fully fledged magazine in 1972 by Frazer and was the longest-surviving international edition of Rolling Stone until its last issue appeared in January 2018.

Roadrunner was a monthly Australian music magazine based in Adelaide, South Australia. The magazine was founded by Stuart Coupe and Donald Robertson and forty-eight issues were published between March 1978 and January 1983.
Alcotomic were a power pop band formed in Melbourne, Victoria, February 1996. Initially the band was called Dozer and the first recording session commenced at the original Birdland Recording Studios in High Street Prahran, Melbourne with record producer Lindsay Gravina. TAGG – The Alternative Gig Guide or TAGG was a free fortnightly Australian music street press published from 1979 to 1981 in Melbourne. It was published by Toorak Times, an independent newspaper started in 1972, and later expanded to Sydney.
Music magazines have been published in Australia since the 1950s. They peaked in popularity during the 1970s and '80s, but currently, there are still several national titles, including local editions of Rolling Stone and the classical music-focused Limelight, among others.
Beat is a free monthly tabloid-sized music magazine published and distributed in Melbourne, Australia. It was Melbourne's longest running street press, and one of the earliest street press after TAGG. Beat paused its print edition between March 2020-May 2022.

Most street press have been centred around music and gig guides, but subjects have also included movies, fashion, and food. Each major city in Australia had at least two music street press at some point, and they were at their most popular during the 1990s.
