Hollylynne Lee

Hollylynne Stohl Lee (also published as Hollylynne Stohl and Hollylynne Stohl Drier) is an American mathematics educator and statistics educator who describes herself as an "educational designer" focusing on technology-based learning. [1] [2] She is a professor of mathematics education in the College of Education at North Carolina State University, where she directs the Hub for Innovation and Research in Statistics Education in the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Education and career

Lee graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in secondary mathematics education. After earning a master's degree from the College of William and Mary in 1995, she completed a doctorate in mathematics education at the University of Virginia in 2000. Her dissertation, Children's Probabilistic Reasoning with a Computer Microworld, was supervised by Joe Garofalo. [3]

While a student, she also worked as a mathematics and statistics teacher at the elementary school, middle school, and high school levels from 1992 to 2000. After completing her Ph.D., she became an assistant professor of mathematics education at North Carolina State University in 2000. She was promoted to full professor in 2013. [3]

Recognition

In 2020, Lee was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association [4] . She has also won the University of North Carolina Board of Governors 2020 Award for Excellence in Teaching [1] and the 2022 Robert Foster Cherry Award. [5]

The Robert Foster Cherry Award is a prize given biennially by Baylor University for "great teaching". The Cherry Award honors professors at the College or University level, in the English-speaking world, with established track records of teaching excellence and the ability to inspire students. Robert Foster Cherry, a graduate of Baylor University, made an estate bequest to establish the award. In a typical award cycle, three Finalists are selected based on nomination packages. The Finalists then compete for the award by giving a series of lectures at Baylor University. Each Finalist receives $15,000 and the ultimate award Recipient receives an additional $250,000 prize. Although the Nobel Foundation doesn't award a Nobel prize for teaching, the Cherry Award is often dubbed as the highest teaching award in the world or the "Nobel Prize" for teaching.

Her research involves understanding the cultural background of minority schoolchildren, particularly Hispanic and Latina/o students in the Southwestern United States, and using that understanding to promote parent engagement and focus mathematics teaching on students' individual strengths. She is the Roy F. Graesser Endowed Professor at the University of Arizona, where she holds appointments in the department of mathematics, the department of mathematics education, and the department of teaching, learning, and sociocultural studies.
